My vote goes to Charlie he appears to have the ability to question refs to make them think. Didnít he get a ref to agree not to give a pen try pointing out that the infringements were not similar in a game?

Flouw has been captain many times on the field but felt it affected his game.

I would have ewels and chudley as the primary options.

Big season for ewels. I think he is v inconsistent, not helped by injuries. He occasionally looks top drawer and ultra physical but not often enough.

Get the impression chudley drives v high standards around the club, training ground etc. Think he woild command a good level of respect.

Soon i hope mercer becomes an option but happy for him to just lead by example and drag performance up as he so often doee. Impressive young man i think

Chudley could be a good idea as a 9 has a feel for how the game is going and whether tactics are working. Close enough to see when the forwards are blowing and often near to the ref for a quiet word.

Pretty sure it will be Ewels - and for me, pretty much the perfect option.

Not many people would question his selection as a first choice starter
Good age - plenty of GP experience, a bit of international exposure - potential to be captain for years to come
Not likely to be missing much of season through Ints
When he towers over a ref he looks uncompromising but not aggressively intimidating

+ the others are all flawed. Flo is coming right to the end, might even retire if he has a really good WC, and may not even be a guaranteed starter any more. Chudley - the club scouts should be scouring the world for a Faf or a Cobus, because a really top-class 9 would push us 2-3 places up the table. Dunn has plenty on his plate. Zach - still competing for starting place and getting back in England squad.

Ewels will get it.

The best captains are from the pack and should be the first name on the team sheet (Guy mercer WTF). Im not entirely convinced Ewels is the best lock at the club and TBH am surprised his is viewed in the same boat as Itoje, Lawes, Launchberry, Kruis by england but hayho im not a professional coach... Ewels it is.

I am another who feels that the captain should be in the pack. I also believe that the captain has to be first choice in his position, and so if everyone is fit the only people who I would consider to be that is Charlie, Faletau and Francois.

I feel that when Francois has done it in the past you lose a bit of what makes him great. Faletau needs to just play, and I have been impressed by Charlie and think it could be a great option for many years.

Never quite understood why the old school of captain and 'pack leader' was discarded. Seems to me like a good version of co-captains. Pack leader to stir the blood, and a cool-headed back as captain to make tactical decisions and be mates with the ref.

Had forgot all about that..... Good memories!!

Zach would get my vote for player of last season... even with strong competition from Ruaridh and Joe. Very consistent with his energy, tackling and line breaks. Let him grow as a player before saddling him with the captaincy.

What exactly make a good Captain these days? Someone intelligent, who understands the game perfectly, is engaging with a ref and has the respect of his peers? Not sure how we would know who that person is tbh, but Ewels seems to have caught the eye of Todd etc so seems a viable choice. I have always wanted Stooke, but heís not on the list...he is a leader of men and brilliant on the pitch but unsure of his decision making and he could well punch the ref.

I'd be very happy with Stooke as well. He was my player of last season and leads by example in a Johnno sort of way. But I think Ewels ticks more boxes and he's clearly very well thought of at many levels of the game.

... IMHO, of course.

Now in Honolulu

I always say this and I know its goes against the ethos of a message board, i.e. to have opinions, but I have no idea. I really cant tell from watching the players play who would make a good captain.
