Martin began his senior rugby
career with Waterloo in 1998 at the tender age
for a prop of 19. He made 64 appearances for them including 4
against the
Tykes in the lower divisions.
Clearly Phil Davies liked what he saw of the Waterloo pack, which
regularly
gave the Tykes and others plenty to think about. So two of his
earliest signings for the Tykes' first Zurich Premiership squad
were O'Keefe, and his front row colleague Matt Holt.
Establishing a place in the Zurich Premiership starting 22 has
proved difficult so far, partly due to the good form and
durability of Shelley and Kerr, with
occasional Parker Pen outings offering his only chances to shine.
To broaden his experience Martin played rugby league last season
with
Gateshead. And at the start of this season he was loaned to
Wakefield to
provide him with regular rugby and sustain match fitness. He has
recently
been recalled after an injury to Justin Wring.
So the supporters have yet to see the sort of rugby of which
he is really
capable. Over a long season no doubt a chance or two will come his
way and we wish him well. At 24 he still has many years ahead of
him as a prop and we hope that the potential PD saw in him is
realised at top level and with the
Tykes.
