Carl Hogg joined Leeds in the later stages of the
Tykes promotion season as Phil Davies looked for a steadying hand in the back
row. Hogg started nine games and added solidity plus options at the back in
the line out.
Having played a key part in securing promotion he was rewarded with the offer
of a contract, and the respect he had engendered led to him being offered the
Club Captaincy for the Tykes first season in the top flight.
The Tykes first Premiership season began brightly with notable wins over Bath,
the Tigers, Saracens and others with Hogg playing his part. Hogg also starred
in the win over Pontypridd in the Parker Pen Shield, battering his way over
from close range and as the clock ticked into overtime.
The second half of the season proved more challenging as the back row combinations
were changed as the Tykes looked for the best unit as a result Hogg started
fewer games.
Carl Hogg’s versatility was demonstrated to good
effect when the Tykes lost both starting locks through injury and suspension.
He was asked to fill in in the second row and performed capably in an unfamiliar
position.
Looking ahead some fans still consider the Tykes back row as one of the areas
of the team which overall needs to improve. We have good defensive qualities
available from all the squad members including Hogg, but some more dynamic running
is called for.
Hogg was quoted as saying he believed it would take the Tykes 2 to 3 years to
become an established ZP outfit. He was right. Can he now produce a season which
will make him a key part of making that happen ?
