Part Four

AUGUST

Wolves added Joachim Bjorklund to the side in time for the trip to Stoke, Wolves first league game since relegation and Wolves first ever game in the newly formed "The Championship". Sadly however it wasn't a game to remember as Wolves' injury hit side suffered a 2-1 defeat with Kenny Miller scoring the only goal for Wolves.

Wolves first home game of the season followed, but Wolves made tough work of Preston North End. The away side raced into a two-nil lead, but Wolves managed to hit back with Leon Clarke and Kenny Miller snatching Wolves a point.

Wolves were in search of their first league win in the Championship but Leeds United (0-0) and Burnley (1-1) both prevented Wolves taking all the points.

Wolves made it through to the next round of the Carling Cup, but they had to come from behind once more as Rochdale took a surprise 2-0 lead. Wolves eventually won 4-2, with Keith Andrews scoring his first ever goal for the club.

Wolves failed to beat Leicester City at Molineux a week later, before Wolves lost to Ipswich Town.

It had been a month to forget. The bookies had fancied Wolves to win the league, but Wolves had failed to win a single league game in the opening month of the season.

SEPTEMBER

Wolves hosted Wigan for the first game in September, but again Wolves failed to win. A 3-3 draw with the side who were top of the league ensured Wolves lowly league position would continue.

Having not won away for sixteen months and having an incredibly poor record against Brighton it was slightly ironic that Wolves first away win and first win of the season would come on the South Coast. However Miller was the scorer and Wolves were finally off the mark for wins.

The first win away for sixteen months came at Brighton and irony was to continue at Plymouth Argyle the same week. After handing Plymouth the lead, Wolves hit back twice with Carl Cort and Dean Sturridge scoring the goals.

Wolves ended the month in which returned two wins with a poor performance against Cardiff City. (2-3)

OCTOBER

The season had started poorly and it was set to continue in October. Wolves lost to West Ham and Nottingham Forest at the start of the month before beating Derby County 2-0 at Molineux.

Wolves then saw off QPR 2-1 on a wet Molineux pitch before traveling to Gillingham at the end of the month.

The trip south to Gillingham however was to prove a vital game in the season of Wolves. It was a game which the home-side won 1-0 and a game which cost Manager Dave Jones his job.
