At the boys’ side number 2 seed Jeremy Chardy and number 3 seed Thiemo de Bakker failed to reach the semifinals, while at the girls side number 1 seed Alexandra Dulgheru went out, as well as number 3 seed Mihaela Buznarescu.

Second round results US Open day 4
The second round in the lower half of the US Open draw provided us with just single surprise in 27th seed Gisela Dulko going out against Korean Yoon-Jeong Cho.

Day 5 and Venus Williams is in orbit
Venus Williams, the US Open champion of 2000 and 2001 has only played two matches so far this tournament. However, she has brought such a high level of play to the court, several levels up from her nearest competitors, that she must be considered the form player at the moment.

Henin struggles, Davenport eases
In today’s second round action, Justine Henin-Hardenne, seeded 7th, stuttered through her match against Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo of Spain, but won in the end. In the meanwhile Lindsay Davenport, seeded 2nd, didn’t have a single problem against French qualifier Pauline Parmentier.

Serena one step closer to Sister Act
The Williams sisters are now one win away from the meeting that all Americans have been waiting for. Serena completed a successful day for the Williams sisters, as she defeated Colombian Catalina Castano, who had reached the second round of the US Open for the first time.

Sharapova blitzes Randriantefy
Number 1 seed Maria Sharapova had a very easy time in her second round US Open match. Madagascar native Dally Randriantefy managed to at least avoid a double bagel (6-0 6-0).

Kim Clijsters overcomes early struggles
After a tough first set Kim Clijsters wasted no time in the second set to overcome her opponent, Colombian Fabiola Zuluaga. Zuluaga, who fell short of her career best US Open third round, offered very little resistance in a comprehensive second set win for Kim Clijsters.

Davenport wins her first round match
Number 2 seed and world number 1 Lindsay Davenport was only occasionally troubled by her opponent, Na Li of China. Davenport needed 3 matchpoints before she was able to move into the second round. Davenport started off well, grabbing an early break against Na Li of China.

Dementieva struggles but survives
Last year’s runner up, 6th seed Elena Dementieva, had a tough first set, but showing her fighting spirit, she managed to avoid a unique situation in losing both players from last year’s final in the first round.

Henin rushes through
Justine Henin-Hardenne, the number 7 seed, wasted no time in winning her first round US Open match. Her opponent, Zuzana Ondraskova, was defeated in just under an hour. After having been broken early, Ondraskova managed to hang on to the first set untill 5-3.
