The 3rd seed Jennifer Capriati wins the $ 625,000 Pilot Pen WTA tournament in New Haven after 1st seed Lindsay Davenport retired on Saturday. Jennifer Capriati was leading 6-2 4-0 when Davenport ended the final.

Lindsay Davenport had to retire from the final due to a left foot injury. She was hoping for a Pilot Pen title after losing three consecutive finals against Venus Williams.

Capriati won her first title since her victory at last years Australian Open. She said she feels great about winning Pilot Pen. She was especialy happy with the way she played and realised that she might not have won if Davenport had not retired.

There was never a competition between the two Americans. Davenport seemed to be afraid to run and she made sure not to put any pressure on her left foot. She broke Capriati’s serve when the 3rd seed double-faulted.

After Davenport called for the trainer to tape the injured foot she found out that the treatment didn’t have any effect and stopped the match when Capriati broke her serve.
