Sixth-seeded Francesca Schiavone lost her first round match at Uncle Tobys Hardcourts Gold Coast. Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain defeats the # 20 ranked Italian in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Seventh seed Magui Serna of Spain and eighth seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder are through to the next round.

Serna defeats Australian wild card Casey Dellacqua in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Patty Schnyder, who was the champion in 1999 beats Jelena Jankovic of Serbia-Montenegro in a quick 6-4, 6-0.

The $170.000 event is showing six top twenty players. Russia is present with five players such as No. two seed Nadia Petrova and Vera Zvonareva as the third seed.

Along with former champion Schnyder the winner of 1998 Ai Sugiyama and the champion of 1997 Elena Likhovtseva joined the list in the stepping stone tournament towards the Australian Open.
