Mary Pierce wins Ordina Open title.

“I was feeling fine and very focused”, Pierce said after she had collected her Ordina Open trophy. “I am very proud and happy about my game getting better”

Klara Koukalova started out very nervous and was 5-0 down before she picked up her game. Pierce was making good use of her serving capacity winning many points forcing Koukalova to miss her returns.  The Czech player came back into the match with producing brilliant shots that were applauded by Pierce as well.

Pierce failed to hold her service games to end the set and Koukalova fought her way into a tie-breaker. At the start of the tie break Pierce still didn’t have an answer to Koukalova’s comeback who lead 5-1 but now the Czech could not make the last two points to win the tie break and the first set. Pierce started to serve better again and took the tie-break 8-6.

In the second set the match was practically over when Pierce was leading 3-1. Koukalova could no longer play the beautiful shots she played in the first set. The French woman breaks for a 5-2 lead and serves for the match. At 30 all she gets her first and only matchpoint to win the Ordina Open title defeating Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (8), 6-2.

“I didn’t like grass at first”, the 29-year-old Pierce said. “There were a lot of bad bounces and there was a lot of wind as well. But this must be a good preparation for Wimbledon”, Pierce said looking ahead to next weeks Championships at Wimbledon. She was troubled by a cold she picked up some ten days ago but she was feeling better.

After Sven Groeneveld had called off the cooperation after the French Open with Pierce she called her younger brother David to help her out with practice. Mary didn’t want to tell why Groeneveld stopped working with her as a coach.
