USA vs. Europe at Wimbledon Semi Finals.

Serena Williams steamrollered compatriot Jennifer Capriati in her quest for her third consecutive Wimbledon title. In only 45 minutes Capriati was sent back into the locker room losing 6-1, 6-1. Serena Williams’ best ever win against Capriati was preceded with two defeats by Capriati, in Rome and at the French Open.

“I don't think I really had much of a chance to get into the match and play. I was just feeling so much pressure from her coming off the baseline, the serve. Basically that's ‑‑ what her game plan was, was to tee off on everything, and she was on, not to let me in it at all. So, really, I just couldn't even get the rallies going”, Jennifer Capriati explained in her post match interview.

Apart from the second set French Amelie Mauresmo was too strong for Argentine Paola Suarez 6-0, 5-7, 6-1. Mauresmo always found a way to outplay her opponent. She made good use of her serve and won beautiful points with backhands and volley’s at the net.

 “I think I went down a little bit physically I think in that second set and I wasn't moving as well, so then I wasn't taking the opportunities. And also she played much better in that second set than she was at the beginning of the match. But I think maybe, yeah, physically I went down a little bit. I don't know why, but that's what happened to me”, Amelie Mauresmo said about losing the second set.

Lindsay Davenport ended the successful winning steak of the 19-year-old Karolina Sprem. Croatian Sprem, who defeated Venus Williams earlier, did not have a chance against 28-year-old Davenport, in 51 minutes the youngster was beaten 6-2, 6-2.

“If she will playing like today, unbelievable, she can win this tournament, that's for sure”, said Sprem. “She was really great player today on the court. I was feeling when she was standing on the court that court's too small for me, I didn't have space really to play”. Karolina Sprem was satisfied with her performance at Wimbledon. “One great week is behind me. But I didn't expect that I would do so much on the Wimbledon. I'm really happy”.

The other youngster, 17-year-old Maria Sharapova, needed three sets to overcome Japan’s Ai Sugiyama, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. The 28-year-old Sugiyama played her 12th Wimbledon tournament but could not use her experience to win the match against the young Russian.

Sharapova was very convinced about her match against Sugiyama; “I haven't surprised myself because I've been playing very well on grass and I've been feeling very good and just coming off of a title in Birmingham, knowing that this is one of my favourite surfaces, you know. This is where my game sometimes comes together. So I was very happy that somehow it came together today”.

The Russian Sharapova also saw the qualities of her opponent: ”I think the first two sets she got some amazing balls that usually with other people would be winners 10 balls ago. But she makes you play ball after ball after ball. Especially on grass when it's so fast, sometimes you don't expect these things to happen. It's not like we're playing on clay where I know that everything is going to come back. But she just played amazing”.
