FL. USA. Career highlights: 1994 Martina made her professional debut at the ITF tournament in Langenthal, Switzerland. Reached the final on a wild card and defeated Sophie George in three sets for her first singles title. She had her WTA tour debut at Zurich defeating Patty Fendick for her first single win. Ended the year ranked at # 84. Martina reached her first final at the 1995 Hamburg tournament and lost to Conchita Martinez. Finished the year ranked at # 16. 1996 Won the first double Grand Slam at 1996 Wimbledon Championships with Helena Sukova being the youngest to do so ever. Won her first WTA tour singles title in 1996 Filderstadt tournament defeating Sanchez-Vicario, Davenport and Huber. She won her second WTA singles title at the 1996 Oakland tournament defeating Monica Seles 6-2 6-0 in the final. Martina reached the 1996 Zurich and the 1996 season ending Championships finals but lost both to Novotna and Graf. Year ending ranking at # 4 1997 The third WTA tour singles title win at 1997 Sydney tournament. Martina won her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open of 1997 defeating Mary Pierce in the final. She also won the doubles title with Zvereva. Martina gained the # 1 in the ranking on March 31 being the youngest player ever to do so. Lost to Iva Majoli in the 1997 Roland Garros final. Won the second Grand Slam singles title at the 1997 Wimbledon Championships defeating Jana Novotna. In the final of the 1997 US Open Martina defeated Venus Williams for the third Grand Slam singles title. Other WTA singles titles for this year were won in Tokyo, Paris Indoors, Miami, Hilton Head, Stanford, San Diego, Filderstadt and Philadelphia. Martina ended the season ranked at #1. 1998 Martina won a doubles Grand Slam at Australia Open with Mirjana Lucic, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open with Jana Novotna. Martina defended her singles title at the Australian Open to make it her fourth Grand Slam title. She also won singles titles at Indian Wells, Hamburg and the Italian Open for 1998. Martina won her first season ending championships defeating Lindsay Davenport. Finished the year ranked at # 2.
Martina won third successive 1999 Australian Open singles title. She defeated Graf and Novotna to win the Pacific Open tournament. Martina took the singles titles of Hilton Head and Berlin. Lost to Graf in the final of the 1999 Roland
Garros French Open tournament. She was just three points away from winning
the clay court Grand Slam tournament. Martina lost the season ending championships to Lindsay Davenport in the final. Ended the season ranked at # 1. 2000 Martina reached the Australian Open finals for the fourth time but lost to Lindsay Davenport. Reached the Australian Open double finals for the fourth time but lost with Mary Pierce against Raymond and Stubbs. Appears in 13 singles finals to win 9 titles; season ending championships, Tokyo, Miami, Hamburg, 's-Hertogenbosch, Canadian Open, Filderstadt, Zurich and Moscow. She won her eight Grand Slam doubles title with Mary Pierce at the French Open. Martina reached the $15 million mark at the season ending championships. Ended the season ranked at # 1. 2001 Won the 2001 Sydney tournament by defeating Lindsay Davenport. Martina and Roger Federer won the Hopman Cup for Switzerland. Lost in the final of the Tokyo Pacific Pan tournament to Lindsay Davenport. Martina won both Doha and Dubai tournaments. First doubles title of the year with Anna Kournikova in Moscow. Lost the no. 1 ranking after she torn three ligaments in her right ankle in Filderstadt in the match against Lindsay Davenport. Due to her surgery on October 14 she was not able to defend her year ending championships title in Munich. Ended the season ranked at # 4. 2002 Martina won the 2002 Sydney tournament singles title by defeating Meghan Shaughnessy. 500th Match won in her career at Sydney when she defeated Kim Clijsters in the semi final. Lost to Jennifer Capriati in her sixth consecutive Australian Open final after holding four match points. Won Tokyo Pacific Pan to be her 40th career title defeating Monica Seles in the final. Withdrew from both Roland Garros and Wimbledon
due to her surgery on May 20th. |
