Biography Jelena Dokic (Yugoslavia) Residence: Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Career highlights: 1997 1998 As a # 588 ranked player Jelena played her fourth
ITF tournament in Saga, Australia. She was defeated by Molik in the
final. Jelena made her Sanex WTA debut at Pattaya and
lost to nr 2 seed Halard-Decugis in three sets. 1999 Alongside Mark Philippoussis, Jelena won the
Hopman Cup for Australia for the first time Qualified for the 1999 Wimbledon Championships
as a #126 upset nr 1 seed Martina Hingis in the first round 6-2 6-0.
Jelena reached the quarterfinal after beating Pierce in the fourth round.
After Wimbledon Jelena’s ranking climbed
to #37. Qualified with the Australian FED Cup team to
the 2000 world group by defeating Barbara Schett of Austria. Ended the year 1999 ranked #43 almost climbing
300 spots since the beginning of the year. 2000 Jelena reached the semi-final of the 2000 Wimbledon
Championships. Jelena beats Venus Williams, ranked #4, with
6-1 6-2 at the 2000 Italian Open. Lost to Monica Seles in the quarterfinal
in three sets. Ended the 2000 season ranked at #26. 2001 Jelena changed her Australian nationality for
the Yugoslavian after a conflict with the Australian Tennis Federation.
In Rome Jelena won her first Sanex WTA title
defeating Mauresmo in the final. Seeded for a Grand Slam for the first time at
no. 15 of the 2001 French Open. Jelena got her first pro career double
bagel in her first round match against Hersi. Reached the 2001 Roland Garros double finals
with Martinez. Jelena won her second WTA singles title at the
2001 Tokyo Princess Cup beating Clijsters and Sanchez-Viccario. In Moscow she got her third career title beating
Dementieva in the final. Qualified for season ending championships. Ended the season ranked at #8. |
