England Set For Follow On

Despite battling half-centuries from Michael Vaughan (61) and Alec Stewart (71no), England closed on an inadequate first-innings 264 for nine in reply to India's record 628 for eight declared.

India's day began with disappointment when Sachin Tendulkar fell seven runs short of his third Test match double-century having batted for more than seven hours and hit three sixes and 19 fours from 330 balls.

But the tourists still reached their highest Test total on foreign soil and their best against England.

England needed 429 to avoid the follow-on, and their prospects of doing so gradually receded as Harbhajan Singh (three for 39) led India's attack in whittling away on a surface offering turn for the spinners and occasional variable bounce for all bowlers.

Vaughan and Stewart had some luck, the former surviving a confident lbw appeal from Anil Kumble just after reaching his 50, and the latter escaping from his very first ball when he edged Ajit Agarkar to second slip only for Sanjay Bangar to floor a tough chance low to his left.
