I love South Wales

Bangor City fan 'Livzy', reveals how South Wales has been a happy hunting ground for the boys in blue so far this season...

Tell you what, I’m beginning to quite like South Wales this season! So far we’ve only been beat down there once and that was at Barry and the only long trip left is Cwmbran in a couple of weeks. OK – its four or five hours each way on what are laughingly called “A” roads, but, its been worth it so far! Four goals at Haverfordwest, six at Carmarthen, five at Llanelli and two each at Lido and Port Talbot. Not a bad return. It’s just a real shame that a number of those trips have been marred by late arrivals, poor weather and rude natives! I suppose it’s the same for them “Taffs” when they come up to Bangor but they all seem to be able to get here on time! (and aren’t we the most friendly and hospitable fans in the league?!) Last season it was our South Wales trips that in many peoples minds, cost us the Championship. Two one-nil defeats against Lido and Port Talbot – both games we dominated, both games we let in stupid goals and both games we got to late. Even Carmarthen on the last day of the season. We needed to win to finish second and scraped a dull 0-0 draw when the person looking most likely to score was Chris Short with a 35 yarder that their keeper somehow managed to tip over the bar. Eight points lost. This year in the same fixtures its nine points won. Admittedly there’s still a long, long way to go till the end of the season but we already seem to be travelling much better than last term. Good on Ken for “lending” the people carriers rather than relying on a coach company to actually know the way down south. Good on the players for being professional enough to fight for every goal, pass and tackle. Good on the supporters who get themselves to these far-flung places come rain or shine. (Or gale force 9 typhoons) There’s not many teams in the League that are going to go to Port Talbot or Lido and come away with three point. There’s not many teams in the League that can get 35+ fans travelling. And there’s certainly not many teams in the League that have the fanatical and passionate support that Bangor City generates. You never know – having the “long hauls” pre-Xmas could well prove a very valuable thing come April 2003! C’monnnnnnn !!
