Sandy Stewart is Airdrie United's first manager. He'll also play at sweeper. Sandy played for Airdrieonians from 1989 till the provisional liquidation of 2000 he returned for Airdrieonians final season. Sandy was the 1992 cup final skipper too.

Sandy joined Airdrieonians FC in 1989 on a free transfer from Kilmarnock. He was then a right winger who had previously played for Pollock Juniors and Hearts (where, ironically, he'd been freed by Alex MacDonald) when Jimmy Bone snapped him up. Sandy had only moderate success as a forward, drifting in and out the team until Bone gave him a man marking job on Falkirks dangerman, Derek McWilliams. Needless to say, Sandy performed exceptionally well in his new defensive role and never looked back. After Bone's departure Sandy continued in his defensive role mainly as a left wing back under Doddie, leading Airdrie in the 1992 Scottish Cup Final as well as playing the two European ties vs. Sparta Prague (in which he nullified their star man Jiri Nemec), the 1995 cupfinal and of course four League Cup semi-finals. He also won the Challenge Cup in 1994 and 2001.

Wee Sandy has an excellent football brain, which in my opinion is just as well as he now lacks pace. Although he will always give 100%, I feel he will cost us a few goals this season.-Humo
