MATCH REVIEW

Reading closed the gap on league leaders Sheffield United to just 3 points thanks to a late 77th minute penalty conversation from Dave Kitson, which unlike Pires and Henry, it managed to find it's way into the net.

Bobby Convey's neat pass found it to the feet of Kitson, who was fouled after a challenge by Lewis Buxton.

Stoke's best chance of the game when a deflected Paul Gallagher shot completely fooled goalie Marcus Hahnemann but fortunately for Reading the ball went wide of the goal.

Reading striker Leroy Lita was ruled out with an ankle injury which makes him a big doubt for next Saturday's game with Leeds United. He is certain to miss the 3rd Round Carling Cup game with Sheffield United.

WHAT THE MANAGER SAID

Steve Coppell, Reading Manager

On the 1:0 win;

"I was well pleased overall. It was cagey in the first half but we were the ones going forward, even though we were the away side.

"In the second half they had a go at us which meant we have to defend a bit harder but also gave us more space to play in."

On the penalty;

"From where I was it looked a pen, but our view is very flat. It looked like he was about to have a shot though.

"There was an incident when Sidwell went down [under a challenge from Simonsen], so maybe it was a case of us getting one out of the two decisions."

On Leroy Lita's injury;

"Leroy has had more or less a problem all year. When he scores it doesn't bother him, when he doesn't it does!

"We've been aware of it, he's not been able to express himself. He had a scan on Friday that shows some bone bruising so we'll wait and see how he is after a few days rest. We don't no exactly how long he'll be out."

On Brynjar Gunnarsson at right back;

"He was terrific, we'd been told he could play there but never seen it ourselves."

On the return of Dave Kitson, Steve Sidwell;

"It's good to have them back and all those options. Graeme Murty was fit as well and he travelled. It was a bit of a gamble with Sid coming on but he coped no problem.

"We had a big physical test this week but have shown we can cope with that. We've another big week coming up."

On changes to the team for the match against Sheffield United;

"It's an insult when people call them fringe players, and I'll play a balanced team. I'll almost certainly make some changes."

Johan Boskamp, Stoke City Manager

"If you see the game, then the draw is the normal result. Neither team really created chances and we made one mistake and it was over.

"Defensively we were okay but attacking we struggled. We didn't penetrate their box enough and we played a little bit different today, so maybe that's why we lost.

"I don't know if it was a penalty. I will no when I look at the tape. From what people have said Gerry Taggart played a lateral ball and from out of that the penalty come.

"It was the only mistake he made and for the rest of the game he was fabulous."
