Hawley never struggled to find the net at any level he played at. It was
just unfortunate for him that he never managed to break in to the Bescot
First Team.
Karl's only appearances
under Ray Graydon came in the LDV Vans cup, but the arrival of Colin Lee
in 01/02 saw Karl awarded a 2 year deal, as Lee liked what he saw.
He made his debut against the Gills, as fans got the first real glimpse of
the man Colin Lee rated so highly.
Lee thought he needed
first team experience, and sent Karl up to Scotland where he played 17
times for Raith in a sixth month loan deal. He found the net 7 times, and
came back continuing to score regulary with the reserves. The fact that
Junior, Leitao, Zdrilic and Birch were all ahead of him in the que meant
his chances were limited, so Lee allowed him to join Hereford for the last
two months of the season.
03/04 was no different
to Karl. His route to the first team squad was blocked by other
established strikers, and after another spell up in Scotland Karl was
released in April 2004.
An initial trial spell
with Boston didn't work out, and Karl signed for Doc Martens outfit
Hednesford Town.
