- Cloughie's second autobiography hits all the notes these kinds of
books usually do. His childhood, starting work, meeting his wife,
starting national service, becoming a footballer then entering
management are all covered.
You get the odd funny story and a
glimpse of how he used to manage his teams, but descriptions tend
to be superficial and the book glosses over some events which you would
much rather read about in more detail.
Cloughs time at Leeds is one of the
most talked about moments in English football. We know a lot went on
behind the scenes at Elland Road, but Cloughs coverage of it is a
real disappointment.
If you are expecting a treasure trove
of Cloughieisms and bizarre Cloughie events then you are likely to be disappointed.
Most of the stories you hear from his old players, colleagues and people
in the media are not even mentioned.
For a book entitled "My
Life", far to much time is spent on modern footballing issues
relating to the likes of Fergie and Wenger. If I wanted to read about
them I would buy a newspaper.
How you feel about this book will
depend on what you are expecting. From my point of view it fails to do
justice to a man who is the most enigmatic character is English football
history.
