Spurs Ready With £7.2 Million Bid For Jenas

Today's Northern Echo is reporting how Tottenham Hotspur are ready to test Newcastle United by offering £7.2m for England international midfielder, Jermaine Jenas.

A week ago, Spurs were keen to launch a £6m bid for the 22-year-old, although these were quickly rebuffed.

Martin Jol is now expected to table a £7.2m bid in an attempt to sign the midfielder.

However, following Laurent Robert's claims that Jenas would leave the club, Newcastle United have insisted Jenas will remain at the club.

An official statement read:

"Jermaine signed a five-year contract until 2008. The player is not for sale and the club has no reason to believe that the player is unhappy.

"The club is furious over Robert's recent outbursts which are clearly designed to be disruptive within the club.

"Nevertheless, Newcastle United are also clear in their view that Jermaine is here for the long term and that Robert - still a contracted player for Newcastle United - should keep his opinions to himself."

Despite being linked with Tottenham, Jermaine Jenas is expected to hold talks with Graeme Souness and Freddy Shepherd on Monday, when he returns for pre-season training.
