Report: Town 2-1 Crewe

Ipswich Town bounced back from Tuesday’s defeat against Burnley, coming from behind to beat Crewe 2-1 earlier today.

Nicky Forster returned to the Town squad but both sides started with the teams that saw them get beat in midweek.

Both sides started well, Eddie Johnson sent a shot wide of the post while Town skipper, Jim Magilton forced Crewe ‘keeper Ben Williams into action when he tried his luck from 30-yards, only to see effort tipped away for a corner, a corner which Darren Currie took and found the head of Richard Naylor but the defender’s header went wide of the goal.

Steve Jones fired wide before Richard Naylor sent another header wide of the goal, as happened on Tuesday night against Burnley, Town were in control of the game before conceding the opening goal.

Town midfielder Kevin Horlock brought down Steve Jones just out side the Town box for a free kick which Vaughan sent into the box, past every one including Town ‘keeper Lewis Price to give Crewe the lead in the 26th minute.

Town tried to find an equaliser before half time, Owen Garvan saw his 25-yard effort pushed round the post while Jason De Vos headed into the arms of Williams.

Town almost found them selves 2-0 down going into half time, Steve Jones having his first effort parried and sending the rebound wide.

At the re-start Town manager Joe Royle replaced striker Sam Parkin, who has picked up a back problem, with defender Fabian Wilnis while Richard Naylor went from centre back to centre forward along side Dean Bowditch for the second half.

9 minutes into the second half Stephen Forster hauled down Naylor 25-yards from goal, the free kick was taken by Darren Currie who curled the ball in to make it 1-1.

Steve Jones tried to regain the lead for Crewe with two long range efforts but Lewis Price was more than up to stopping them finding the back of the net.

At the hour mark Town made there final two changes of the game, Nicky Forster and Jimmy Juan coming on in place of Dean Bowditch and Jim Magilton. The change paid off after just 8 minutes as Forster had fired Town 2-1 in front.

The 32-year-old had been out for almost two months but from his goal you would not have known it, Forster used a burst of pace to take him and the ball into the Crewe box before slotting the ball into the net.

Forster went close to making it 3-1 10 minutes later, but Ben Williams was up to the task of stopping him.

It finished 2-1, Town climb to 8th in the table, just a point outside the play-offs.
