Poster Profile 30: Trev J
By The Prof
October 1 2003
| Board Name: | Trev J |
| Age: | 47 |
| Location: | Gosport, Hampshire |
| Occupation: | Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Engineering Training (civilian employee now, ex-RN) |
| Why did you choose your board name?: | It's an abbreviated version of my real name (Trev Jackson). Pseudonyms are ok and fun, but I prefer people to know who I am for real |
| How long have you been supporting Quins?: | Couldn't put a date on it, but it was sometime in the mid 80's, although I didn't start attending matches regularly until I left the RN in 1997 (for obvious reasons). STH for five years now, along with my wife, Sandra |
| How did you start supporting Quins?: | I started watching after going to a match with a navy buddy. Even though I used to support Blackheath as a kid, I began to really enjoy coming to The Stoop. By the mid 90's Rugby was changing fast and the regime at Blackheath was locked in a time warp. The atmosphere at The Stoop was much happier and less formal. Those who call 'Quins conservative should try getting in the President's Bar at The Rectory Field without a tie on..!! |
| If you play(ed) rugby what position did/do you play?: | At school I played wherever the games master put me, but it soon became apparent I wasn't exactly front row material. In the navy I only ever played 'Ship's Rugger' (the lowest level, really) at Centre Threequarter (inside or out. What versatility, eh?). I'd occasionally loaf on the wing where I could preen myself and look after my hair…!!! |
| Best ever Quins game: | The Pilkington Cup final win. A bunch of us on my ship hired a minibus and we came up from "Guzz" (Plymouth) and made a weekend of it. What a run..!! |
| Favourite off pitch Quins experience: | Just being there |
| What is the most ridiculous rugby related thing you have done?: | Loads of things, and the next-morning-embarrassment-factor was always huge. Example: I once got into a "raw chilli pepper eating contest" with my opposite number in an army team my ship played against once. We'd lost the match, so it was really important to win the third half (the navy has its pride, you know). I won, and for my efforts I was soaked in lager and had a sore arse for a week when the chillis went through |
| Favourite Ground (after The Stoop): | Gosport Park, home of Gosport and Fareham RFC. A truly friendly club in the best traditions of the game. Support (apart from "Goss") for ZP clubs there is evenly divided between 'Quins and London Irish. The banter is often raucous, but never nasty. Our little home has been knocked down this summer and a new clubhouse, bar and changing rooms is being built. We raised more than half the money ourselves, the rest came from a lottery grant |
| Favourite Quins Player: | Jason Leonard. A true Prince amongst men |
| Favourite Non-Quins Player: | Richard Hill (Saracens). The best flank forward in world rugby, and if ever a man put himself on the line for his team, it's him. Absolutely indispensable to England |
| Most likely to say?: | "I didn't, did I?" (The next morning) |
| Least likely to say?: | "What a gentleman that nice Mr Johnson is" |
| What are your non-rugby pastimes?: | Cricket. I love cricket. If God is a sportsman, then he is surely a cricketer. I am a member of the Association of Cricket Umpires and stand in matches for my local club, Gosport Borough, every summer. I played navy cricket throughout my career as a wicketkeeper / batsman. I also enjoy classical literature, lazy walks along the seafront followed by a nice pub lunch in the pub at the end of the bay. I fund raise for the NSPCC and take an interest in Service charity fund raising events |
| Favourite Film(s): | The Italian Job |
| Favourite TV Programme(s): | Fawlty Towers |
| Favourite Book(s): | Anything by Thomas Hardy (what an old romantic). E A Poe (not so romantic). Lots of others, all written by people who have been dead for a very long time |
| Favourite Music: | Beatles, Mozart and Pink Floyd (not in any particular order) |
| Favourite Food(s): | English. Plain and simple |
| Favourite Drinks(s): | Beer: Guinness Spirit: Dark rum. Wine: Best left alone |
| Favourite Quotation(s): | "What does not destroy you makes you stronger" (Clausewitz, German war philosopher) |
| Favourite Place(s) to visit: | If I live long enough for space tourism, I'd love to go into space. I've been everywhere on Earth |
| When you were young what did you want Jim to Fix for you?: | My bike. I was always crashing it and my dad made me fix it myself. It was his way of teaching me to either ride carefully or take the responsibility for my actions |
| Tell us THREE things about yourself that we wouldn't know. BUT, TWO of these should be true, but ONE should be totally made up: |
1. For an ex-serviceman, I actually despise the futility of wars fought unnecesarily, and hate politicians who send troops to die needlessly. There are times when it is right to fight and there are times when it is right to talk. "Jaw-jaw is better than war-war" (Churchill). 2. I was the only man who stayed faithful to his wife, during or after the social attended by the Pi Epsilon Delta sorority, held in 7R Petty Officer's Mess, HMS Ark Royal, at Fort Lauderdale, 1992. 3. Generally speaking, I can hold my beer as well as the next man, but wine is an absolute no-no. Wine makes me do things I regret. Bacchanalian excess has been behind the most embarrassing moments of my life. Motto: "Never mix grape and grain". |
