Harlequin Ladies' Play-off Hopes Dashed
By Jo Everett
April 28 2004
Sunday saw Harlequin Ladies lose to Reading, narrowly missing out on the Division 1 playoffs and the chance for promotion into the Premiership, (Harlequin Ladies 5 - Reading 11).
Quins kicked off and followed up with a good chase, quickly securing a turnover ball. Reading were then forced onto the back foot, with Harlequins playing a tight game and keeping Reading in their own twenty-two for the first quarter of the game.
When Reading did gain possession, they kicked effectively to secure a better field position. Now it was Harlequins' turn to play a more defensive game. Although Quins kept Reading from crossing the line in the first half, they were unable to secure the clean ball they needed to work their way back down the pitch.
On receiving the second half kick-off, Quins once again made a strong challenge; capitalising on the penalties conceded by Reading, and forcing them deep into their own half. From here the Quins pack were able to set up a strong drive over the line with Number 8, Vicky Gallagher touching the ball down.
Once again the tables turned and Reading began to dominate. Reading kicked for territory again, but were unable to break through the Harlequins' defensive line. When Quins conceded two penalties in quick succession in their own twenty-two, reading decided to kick for the points and were unable to steal the lead with two converted penalties. From here, Reading gained the confidence for the first time to run the ball at Quins. In the final minute of the game they finally created the overlap they needed to score, leaving Quins hopes of a playoff place dashed.
The Harlequin Ladies would like to thank Cottesloe Properties Ltd for sponsoring their game today.
