Harlequin Old Girls Keep Up Their Old Form

Sunday saw a convincing win for the Harlequin Old Girls in the Sue Moloney Memorial Cup game (Harlequin Ladies 10 – Harlequin Old Girls 31)

The game was played in memory of former Harlequins player, Sue Moloney, who died from meningitis 4 years ago, and was the first time that the 1st XV have lost the cup since the memorial game began in 2000.

Quins received the kick-off and launched a strong attack, but the Old Girls defended well and challenged hard for possession in the rucks. The first half proved to be evenly-matched, with both teams tackling well to keep a clean sheet for the first twenty minutes. It was to be Harlequins who opened the scoring, with their strong support running setting up Centre, Saskia Brazier-Kobus, for the try.

The Old Girls fought back well, and soon stole the lead with their own converted try. It was near the end of the first half, when the Old Girls conceded a penalty in their own half and Dani Knight, at Fly-half, kicked Quins to within a couple of metres of the try line. The forwards executed a perfect catch-and-drive, with Prop, Tanya Wilson finishing off the try.

The Harlequin Ladies may have hoped that the Old Girls had lost their match fitness, but this was not to be the case. The second half saw the Old Girls raise their game and dominate possession. Thanks to their excellent lines of running, they were able to disrupt Harlequins’ defence and run in 3 more tries.

The afternoon proved to be a fine tribute to Sue, with so many of her previous team-mates returning to play the game that she loved. It was also a fine finish for 1st XV Captain, Sam Marshall, who is standing down from her captaincy. Sam has led the team to many a victory over the season and proved to be an inspirational leader. Harlequins now have a Summer break before returning to the 2004/2005 season in September.
