Ladies lose to OAs

Sunday afternoon proved to be too great a challenge for the Harlequin Ladies, who faced Division 1 South Champions with only 13 players for much of the game, writes Jo Everett. (Old Albanians 77 - Harlequin Ladies 0)

Although Quins made a positive start to the game, attacking their way into the OA’s half with some strong runs from winger Alex Burbidge, they soon let their concentration slip. Old Albanians then made great use of their pace out-wide, running in two quick tries.

Harlequins were then forced onto the back foot and failed to exert enough pressure in defence, allowing OAs to pile on the points. Quins were able to raise their game for the final 15 minutes of the first half, with a more organised defence keeping Old Albanians from scoring until the final minute of injury time.

The second half opened badly for Quins, with OAs scoring two tries in quick succession, and the injury count taking Harlequins down to just 13 players. Although Quins kept their heads up and played for the full 80 minutes, Old Albanians made the most of their two man overlap to take their final score to 77 – 0.

Harlequins Coach, Dave Moloney, was disappointed in the game, noting that “except for the first few minutes of the game, and the final minutes of the first half, it was the most abject performance of the season. We need to play with a full squad of committed players who are willing to fight for every bit of possession.”

Harlequins face Folkestone for their crucial final league fixture next Sunday. They will need to think hard on Sunday’s errors and raise their game considerably to keep them clear of the threat of relegation.
