Match Thread: Sheffield United vs Wolves

By Wolves
July 8 2020

Wolves face another tough challenge today when they travel to face Sheffield United at Brammall Lane this evening. United have had a superb first season in The Premiership - much like Wolves last season - and are still fighting for a place in Europe.

As always the focus of Nuno Espirito Santo and his team is on tonight's game rather than their position in the League or their chances of playing in Europe again next season. United Manager Chris Wilder would presumably quote the same attitude, however he must be very proud of his team's achievments so far. They took a very early lead at Molineux earlier in the season (so early I was still trying to get into the ground!!) and held on for a valuable point after Matt Doherty's equaliser. Wolves will be keen to eradicate the memory of Saturday's poor performance against the revitalised Arsenal and hope for three points to maintain their recent away form.

Whilst United have a couple of injuries to midfielders - and Leon Clark - Wolves' only concern is Pedro Neto who took a 'strong kick' on Saturday and may be unfit. However Daniel Podence is avialable for selection having been cleared to play after his return from Portugal where he went for personal reasons.  So it seems the main question will be whether Nuno sticks with his 3-5-2 formation with Dendoncker in midfield or tries again with 3-4-3 with Jota and Traore upfront.

Tonight's game will kick off at 18:00hrs and will be officiated by the very experienced Martin Atkinson.

The game will be screened on Sky Sports.

This board will hope to carry regular updates for those unable to watch the game, and members are encouraged to post their observations

Well I have this down for a Wolves win on the prediction league but it will be a tough match.
Should be good viewing, just hoping that we have the bigger smiles after 90 minutes.

So Nuno has dropped Donk and restored Diogo Jota to the front line for tonight's game, whilst as expected Podence replaces Neto on the bench:

I also think it will be another tough match LH. I would normally go for a Wolves win but think this could end at 1 - 1. However I would prefer you to be correct!!

I’m also hoping Ruben Neves can score a long overdue goal.

Adama in a mild collision with Stephens and immediately grasps his troublesome shoulder. Has treatment and back on.

Wolves progress well up pitch but poor play from Doc following a throw in. Good break by Adama & Raul goes so close. Good pressure from Wolves- break by Jota but his pass to Raul cleared for a corner. Good play. Corner wasted & foul by Jonny loses us possession

Evening

An entertaining start to the match, Blades showing that they can be dangerous but we are playing much better and look very good in possession. We’ve had a couple of good build ups which haven’t quite worked but promising. All stopped for the obligatory water break ...... cough .....tactical break. Hopefully they wont become permanent.

Utd putting three on Adama but he still gets a good cross for Jota. Jota breaks well and brought down on edge of area for a Neves free kick & he hits the bar!!

Brilliant free kick by Neves , bounces off the bar. Great move before that, Jota practically through but bundled down. We are picking it up a bit after a dull period after the drinks break

Shot by Neves from outside area - naturally - but high & wide. Good defending by Saissto stop Sharpe. Busy in our area until Adama breaks out but fouled again. Cross by Adama but too close to the goalie

Two good stops by CC in last minute before 3 more of AT. Corner to Utd well cleared by Doc. Strong period of play for Utd. Wolves break and Doc crosses for Joao but his shot is well wide as we approach half time

Hopefully I will have more luck for the second half.

Wolves have been the dominant side in 1st half making some good forays forward but no final ball, and have defended well when required. Neves went closest with a free kick hitting the bar. United are a dangerous side and we cannot afford to lose concentration. Good to Jota attacking welol to give them something to think about on both sides of the pitch. Hoping Doc & Adama will be able to link up a bit more positively in second half.
Here we go again with no changes to either team

Free kick by Joao cleared & blasted over by Neves. Sharpe picked out well and finds the net clearly offside.

We continue to defend well but toothless up front. Jota made another fine run but fizzled out with Raul. Great pass by Stephens across our area but too far ahead of their strikers. Hit & hope from Adama wastes an attacking chance.

Blades seem to be making the most of some sloppy passing from Wolves - they’re putting pressure on and creating a few problems. 59 minutes gone and we’re a bit off the pace for the moment. COYW!!

That’s a relief!!!

Stephens booked for an attempted cynical foul on Adama. Crosses are too close to Henderson - he’s a big lad!

Sharp off for Utd during the drinks break, replaced by Zipkovic who is apparently Dutch!!
Hard won ballon the right by Adama & puts a good cross in cleared for a throw. Raul playing well in all areas of the pitch. CC’s passing not so good tonight

15 minutes to find one, either side ...... poor fare this half. If we do get one, hard to see Traore not being involved TBH

They all talk about us scoring in the second half in games - well we never looked like getting one again today. Utd made a good surge towards near the end and it was a good header to win it. So disappointed with the lack of forward play from our team tonight. The constant passing backwards when a move forward has started is so frustrating and unproductive. At this rate we will be lucky to qualify for Europa League again!
Sheffield Utd 1 Wolves 0

A draw was always on the cards tonight ..... based on play. The first half we showed promise but in the second, oh dear, so disappointing.

A draw would have been fair but we didn’t create any chances of note and on that basis can be argued we deserved nothing, despite being the away side. And there lies the issue to our otherwise great team .......... we are just not creative enough in the final third to deserve a top 4 place ...... and I say that through gritted teeth. Look at the sides really pushing for these top place ....... goals, goals, goals!! Maybe it was right to take off Traore, maybe he was a bit jaded but once again, although he was quiet by his standards, he still offers the most exciting moments ..... even tonight. You just don’t get the feeling we’re going to spank anyone at the moment!

Everton on Sunday ....... let’s smash the Toffees!! Time to really put a side under pressure. Please no fizzling of this otherwise great season.

Well, I suppose it was better than Saturday.
Never looked like scoring. Have to say I thought Traore was poor apart from a couple of runs and Boly nowhere near his usual standard. Don't read me wrong, I like Boly but today at times Raul defended better.
I know I'm a miserable old sod but I hope this idea of playing the match in what is effectively four quarters doesn't catch on. What they needed a water break for in that weather Christ knows.

Again some sloppy passing didn’t allow us to create anything and the reluctance to allow the midfielders to move further forward and apply extra pressure doesn’t put any real threat to their defenders who generally only have to cope with Raul.
Not playing at our best at the moment, need to find that old spark.

Being reported now that Nuno says Adama did dislocate hi shoulder just after kick off

Re: Match Thread: Sheffield United vs Wolves

The fact Adama was injured not playing to his full potential subsequently resulting in the turgid rubbish of this game illustrates what a one man team we are without him carrying as much offensive threat as a one armed anorexic clutching a feather duster going into battle.

We are so predictable in attack and have been in some time. Traores pace trying to unlock defences or long range pot luck shots from Neves who at times does nothing else. Jota is not good enough at this level in either creativity or finishing with a midfield that is far too slow to be considered anywhere near a top side. Today was as bad as anything I've ever seen watching wolves even going back to the Colin Lee/Dave Jones era where at one point we were on the edge of the box proceeding to then back pass all the way to the keeper.. what's all that about?

We seem to be a counter attacking team with no flexibility to change style based on who we play and suspect we would struggle to beat a league 2 side similar to Shrewsbury playing them on a regular basis yet will give " top " teams problems as our defensive counter attacking game is suited to having hardly any possession and breaking quickly.

Another point of interest is the tactics regarding the 1st half where if league tables based on just the first half were produced we would be rock bottom of the league even below Norwich. I think it's deliberate from Nuno to do the bare minimum in the first 45 minutes keeping players fresh and then going flat out in the second half... it's hard to argue with results but it's got to the stage where I'm tempted not to bother finding streams before the HT whistle goes as it is nailed on to be Wolves with a 0 next to it.

When Neves scores from outside the area it looks great, but he is going to have to vary his game more and be more creative in the final third. I wonder what percentage of his pot shots actually hit the back of the net, or at least force a diving save from the oppositions goalkeeper.

In addition, I'm also extremely disappointed to see the ridiculous virtue signalling of wolves players ( and other teams) kneeling for the " black lives matter movement ". This organisation is purported to deal with racism but it's an extreme far left group close to Marxism supporting anti capitalism as well as disbanding police forces etc... witnessing footballers on thousands of pounds per week adopting a subservient kneeling stance behind this group is not only hypocritical but utterly laughable.

Football is a working mans sport which serves as a form of escapism for many and should not be used as a platform to advertise organisations like this which many including me don't support. I would take it as a given the vast majority of people don't care what colour a persons skin is and expecting players to kneel like lapdogs to prove they don't condone racism is disgusting and as pathetic as people wanting to tear down statues of Winston churchill etc so they can take a few selfies on twatter/fb

The problem with it now Angry is that players, support staff and (I dare say) even officials are now frightened to stay off their knee, as they will be accused of being racists!! I believe the movement has been hijacked in the public protests by the left wing movement, rather than it actually being such a movement. Their public demonstrations have equally been an opportunity for the right -wing fascists to get out on the streets and cause their own mayhem which has turned an ostensibly peaceful protest into a violent confrontation.
My opinion is that the players opted to show their support for Black lives Matter - as they would be expected to because there are no all-white teams playing these days - and I support them for doing so, however I now think they have made their point and it is time to move on before it's seen as a boring ritual.

Re: Match Thread: Sheffield United vs Wolves

The public demonstrations for the most part have nothing to do with racism or black lives- they have been taken over by thugs primarily under 25 defacing private/public property. It was similar in 2011 when we had mindless idiots smashing businesses up due to one black death and there are parallels today with events of 9 years ago.

3 people died in a racist attack in Reading where a black immigrant attacked 3 white males... any footballers kneeling for them or just a convicted robber in the states who threatened to blow a baby out of a pregnant womans stomach. All lives matter, black lives should not be regarded as any different to white lives and I'm disgusted by every club involved with this ridiculous movement which has now been ostracised by many who purported to support it a few weeks ago

I think rather than these empty gestures and logos talking about BLM kneeling down like a slave supporting an anti capitalist movement on millions of pounds per year, NHS badges ( an organisation which is hugely flawed with gross incompetence across the sector leaving as we saw in the news this week thousands of women permanently disfigured with the " mesh procedure" , rainbow armbands etc the players should do what they are paid to do .... kick a ball about. I don't believe movements linked to politics, religion or race should feature in football
