Match Report – Plymouth Argyle

Chester battled hard and will be disappointed not to be in the hat for the second round after a brave performance against Division two’s Plymouth Argyle at the Deva Stadium. City had chances to win the game but finally went down 2-1.

Mark Wright made a lot of changes after the disappointed result away at Woking on Saturday. Michael Twiss, Mark Beesley, Paul Carden, Scott Guyett and goalkeeper Ian McCaldon all came into the starting line-up. City top goal scorer Ryan Sugden had to make do with a place on the substitutes bench.

The lowest home crowd of the season witnessed Plymouth spurn two sitters on 15 minutes. City went ahead half way though the half when a Kevin McIntyre pin point cross found Aussie defender Scott Guyett who netted with a downward header which bounced past 4 Argyle defenders.

It wasn’t long before Plymouth equalised through a powerful Marino Keith strike from a tight angle. On loan keeper Ian McCaldon dropped to his knees and in some peoples eyes was to blame as Keith’s strike flew in over his head.

After the half time break Chester had a chance to go back into the lead with a Sugden strike scream past the Plymouth angle from 10 yards out. A series of City corners followed with Brady supplying crosses with quality – something which has been missing at Chester for a long time.

The Blues continued to create chances without converting. Plymouth saw 3 long range strike fly over the goal and south terrace in 10 minutes.

With just minutes remaining Chester throw everything forward and almost took the game to extra time when a shot was deflected wide of the Argyle goal line.

City are now eliminated from the LDV trophy.
