Match Report – Stevenage Borough

Daryl Clare made it 3 goals in 2 games with the games only goal, just before half time. With both Yeovil and Doncaster failing to win, City have moved into second place and only 3 points off the top spot.

After the last 6 league games left Chester in the bottom 3 of the form guide a victory over lowly Stevenage Borough was vital for City’s promotion push.

Stevenage almost took a shock lead just minutes into the fixture when poor marking let a Stevenage centre back watch his header clip the bar. From then onwards Borough had the lions share of the possession and were firmly in control of the game without creating chances.

A rare counter created a 3 on 2 situation for the blues but Sugden fell over and Borough regained their domination.

The only goal of the game came in deep first half injury when Clare collected the ball from Ryan Sugden and beat three Stevenage defenders before driving low and hard from 8 yards out.

The second half wasn’t much better than the first with few city chances. Chester can thank keeper Wayne Brown for their 3 points as the England semi professional was in supreme form to keep Borough out.

Brown’s heroics included a fantastic save late in the game from a long range strike which swerved in the air.

With a 2nd half comeback from Dagenham leaving Yeovil with just a point and Morecambe cruising past Doncaster 3-0, City will be more than pleased going into the FA Cup break. Next Up Colchester United.
