Nick Walshe signs up

Sale have signed scrum/fly half Nick Walshe from Saracens. The frequency of Sarries scrum half Kyran Bracken's injuries has meant that Walshe has played quite a lot since joining them in summer 1999. He also toured with England in 2000 and 2001.

Alan Dickens has proved so far to be a good understudy for Bryan Redpath at Sale, and with James Bramhall also in the picture at scrum half, it would appear that Walshe has been signed more for his ability in the other back line positions. We have been going on all season about a needing a replacement for Charlie Hodgson who, mercifully, has not had a serious injury all season. Walshe fits that role and Jim Mallinder said:

"Nick has a wealth of experience and the good thing about him is that he can play equally well at fly-half and played against Sale in the number ten shirt last season. He is also a goalkicker so will provide cover for both Bryan Redpath and Charlie Hodgson."

Walshe took part in Engand's tour of South Africa in 2000 and the North America jaunt last year. Before that he appeared for England A.
