Can Carnegie Conquer Kingsholm?

Our first away trip of the season sees us go to Kingsholm to face a bruised Gloucester, who suffered a shock opening day defeat at the hands of local rivals Exeter.

Last week we played well in the first half, proving that we can stick with sides for large parts of the game. We were indeed unlucky not to be in the lead at half time. The second half was a dour affair, with Leeds showing defensive frailties that were uncharacteristic last season. We did well to create chances in spells but lacked real potency to convert them into points. The game improved in the later stages with the introduction of experienced heads, such as Thompson, Hinton and Barrow.

Team selection will be interesting this week after a few boys picked up some minor injuries. I would be tempted to start with Hinton, who seemed to get the back line moving when he came on. He also gives us a second option in terms of kicking as it doesn’t seem like Lachlan MacKay can offer this.

The Cherry and Whites will be looking to bounce back in their first home game. Exeter proved that they are beatable, especially if you keep the game tight. With real threats like Lesley Vainakolo and James Simpson-Daniel on the wings, it is important that we stick to our strengths and keep the ball in the forwards for as long as possible. It may seem an unattractive brand of rugby but it was something that was hugely successful for the majority of last term.

I’m sure the Gloucester hierarchy will have thought long and hard about where it all went wrong last week and they may not take Leeds that seriously given our plight against Bath. This could prove to be a massive boost for Carnegie as on more than one occasion last year we achieved shock away wins at grounds where we weren’t given much hope. We seem to thrive away from home and perform without the pressure of a home crowd, as if the shackles are off and we play with more freedom. I agree that in order to succeed in gaining a top six finish we need to make Headingley a fortress and win the majority of home games. However, supplementing these victories with the occasional win on the road can only help our aim.I predict a close encounter with Leeds gaining at least a losing bonus point to get their points tally for the season under way. Gloucester will want to show that last week’s dismal display was merely a blip and that they can still battle with the best. Leeds must start strongly and lay down the marker for the rest of the game. Taking chances must be the order of the day as it can be disheartening for players and supporters alike when you create so much and convert so little. Enjoy the game.
