Amlin Cup - quel ennui!

Shocking!

Well that is just our luck. The Leeds Carnegie squad start to show some signs that they might just be able to make a fist of things in the Aviva Premiership and the whole thing is put on ice for a month. This weekend we will be mainly playing in Paris. Surely that would be enough to get anyone excited – playing against one of Europe’s top clubs. Well err….no!

What we need at the moment is continuity in the league. That is not possible as we have 4 weeks of cup rugby to endure. Those who are going to Paris to watch the game will, undoubtedly, have a great weekend. The rest of us will feign interest in the score but will really be fretting about our precarious league position. Before our form improved the cup competitions were there for experimentation. Now I am worried sick that key players will get injured and miss the visit of the Tigers in mid- February. It is funny how a couple of decent performances can change one’s outlook on the fixture list. I can remember being happy, earlier in the season,  when the break for cup games arrived to give us some relief from the pain of watching the lads getting tonked every week. Looking forward to league matches. Now that is a novelty which will not diminish with the passing of the next 4 weeks!

Having demanded a settled side to play league and cup games it may come as a surprise to hear that I have changed my tack this week and insist on changes to the squad which will ensure that key personnel remain fit and healthy for the trials to come. This means Fulton, Ceiron, Scott Barrow and Henry should all be preserved in aspic until the fine upstanding boys from Welford Road hit town.  Clearly this is not going to happen but I will be surprised if Fulton makes the trip to France. Neil Back will probably field a strong side in order to continue the good work started a few weeks ago. Key players can always be subbed early to be on the safe side.

So how will things pan out for the team? Just as they did at Headingley I think that the lads will take the game to Stade but will end up losing by a small margin. In honour of the late Napoleon Bonaparte I have gone for a home win by 18-12 (geddit?).
