Our Date with Destiny

So the big one is almost upon us. I shall not be spending too much time telling everyone how important the game is to both clubs, or indeed how much we all need to be up for this – I suspect we all already know. What I can do is share my thoughts on the Falcons after listening to their defeat to Exeter last week, and what I think we need to do to bring home the points.
Newcastle are a team in turmoil. They have a fixture list that leaves them with no bottom of the table matches left (apart from us) and a record of just 2 losing bonus points all season. The performance they put in against Exeter was riddled with knock-ons, penalty offences and missed kicks. Leeds are a team going through change. We have two opportunities against Sale and Exeter to get points alongside these two Falcons games: we also have notched up 5 losing bonus points so far. Sadly, our performances this season have also been riddled with knock-ons, silly penalties and missed kicks. What we do have, though, is a captain fantastic who has given us all a huge lift by committing his near term future to the club after signing a new 2 year deal and a team spirit that may have wavered at times, but is still alive and kicking.
This game is clearly not going to be one for the faint-hearted, or indeed the purists looking for tries: Leeds clearly have what it takes up front – our scrum and lineout will be examined, but are good enough to come through, even without the England boys. Our backline could be in bother if the Falcons can get the ball out wide, but it’s the halfback combinations for both teams that attract all the attention with the ongoing controversy at flyhalf and stuttering scrummies at Leeds against an unpopular scrum half Mickey Young (according to their fans forum) and a partially unfit Gopperth who took a knock last week. The deciding factor could yet be the good old British weather, as we’re due for a wet weekend and a muddy scrap could be just what we need to take the honours. So, with that said, I have the dubious honour of predicting the score and I plump for a final outcome of Leeds 16 – 10 Newcastle: a try apiece but pens doing enough for us to clinch the points. A result, of course, that will still leave us bottom.
Life, however, has a way of putting things into perspective and as I prepared to write a tubthumping call to arms to get everyone in the mood for Sunday’s clash two unrelated events on Wednesday made me realise that there is yet more to life (after all if the worst happens on Sunday we are not actually relegated this week). I refer, firstly, to the birth of my sister’s first child – 9LB Jonathan looks like he could be a big fella and we reckon he could make a fine young rugby player. Secondly to the terrible injuries sustained by one of our own. James Tincknell is now in a critical condition in a Middlesbrough hospital after sustaining head injuries in a car accident – a young man who has already become a fine young rugby player. Tinkerbell and all his family and friends carry our best wishes and hopes for a full and speedy recovery.
Finally, I hope that whatever the game on Sunday throws at us and whatever stress and nerves we endure that we’ll put up a fine display of cheering, wearing our Lemonheads with pride, to show the players that come what may we’re still behind them – CMON LEEDS!

PS i dont think there will be much running rugby on sunday and i expect the wingers to have a very quiet afternoon i will be amazed if the ball is passed much from the scrum halves out to the backs.
