Hang 'em High

Looks solid in the scrums

On Sunday Leeds Carnegie visits old rivals Rotherham Titans. Both sides are looking for their first win of the season. The Clifton Lane pitch will be cleared of mangrove in good time for the kick-off. The question which is vexing the Tykes fans is..which of the players will turn up on Sunday and put in a solid 80 minutes for the club?

There were three groups of players on the field last week:

The newcomers to the club

The promoted academy players

The old boys.

The newcomers impressed me with their application. Davey Young looked solid in the set piece. Ryan Burrows took half a game to settle in but then showed us his potential with a fine try. Stevie McColl look every inch the fullback we were hoping for. His running was positive and he was always looking to link up with his fellow backs.

The kids were OK. Denman looked feisty. Both 9's looked sharp, with Dan White's passing looking tasty. Richards in the centre followed by Thornley will both do well. Wilson is a flyer who will score a hatfull of tries for us. Joe Ford will have better games but he still managed to kick 3 goals for us.

My main gripe is the absence of the "senior players" who were supposed to guide and mentor the kids. The skipper was very quiet. Hoeneck was absent until midway through the second half when he started to dominate the lineout. Big Red was workmanlike without setting the place on fire. Rowan was anonymous. Pendlebury looked short of match practice. Blackett was subdued and Barrow looked out of his depth.

Our tactics were bold but foolish against the Exiles. Young Ford needs to vary the play a bit more and occasionally hang up a high ball, a tactic which will work down at the swamp on Sunday. I thought Scott Barrow might have suggested as much but no. Rotherham will be well up for it at the weekend. They will sniff another upset (as well as the marsh gases) and are no doubt watering the pitch as I write. Leeds can win the game but the lads will have to play with a bit more thought and the senior players will have to stand up and be counted if we are to snaffle a win in South Yorkshire.

I suggest a collective improvement will be seen this weekend, including a WIN!

I fully expect a win. Problem is the rain. If it does rain, the pitch will become a swamp on which anything can happen.

agree about the 3 sets of players. the old lags need to up their game to match the new lads and the kids. it'll come, and i reckon we'll do alright when we're all firing at a level.

Who was at this fixture a few years back?

Andy Tuilagi has the ball, man outside him, it's surely a try...no he held onto the ball and got tackled into touch.

How many times did we see that over the next few seasons?

Plus I left my car in the worst part of Rotherham with £40 on display on the dashboard and it was still there when I got back.

I was at the "Tuilagi game" dreadful conditions.

But can't be this time. As it was originally scheduled for Saturday, I arranged to go on holiday on Sunday.......

So will only be with you all in spirit.

Don't knock Roth - it was brilliant sunshine last time we were there. They've a great clubhouse, DECENT HAND-PULLED BEER, Sound Snap and plenty of banter from their loyal supporters.

Give 'em the respect they deserve, after all they supplied us with Shrek, Blackie,Erik and Joe B amongst others...

Mark C makes a very valid point. Perhaps he should change his signature to:

Rotherham Titans....
Where legends are made!!
Leeds Carnegie....
Where legends are ruined or sold off!!
