Blues cruise as Carnegie crumbles

The eagerly awaited clash with Bedford Blues at Cross Green took place in near Arctic conditions. However Leeds failed to make it hot as the Blues cruised to an emphatic win scoring umpteen tries along the way.
Bedford arrived at Otley expecting to meet a rampant Leeds team surging up the league on the back of 3 straight wins. Instead they met a team who were hoping to get by without making any tackles. Bedford refused to follow the script and carnage ensued. To say that Leeds were profligate when it came to defending is a major understatement. Joe Ford scored the first points before the Blues realised that Leeds thought that they were playing tag rugby. Then the floodgates opened.
With 5 minutes left in the first half Bedford had scored 3 tries to our one. I pointed out that we were in danger of conceding a bonus point before halftime because I felt that the Blues looked like getting a 4th try. I was wrong - they got 2 more before the break.
We turned round 13-33 down. The forwards ground out an early score for the skipper & we had a glimmer of a comeback. The Bedford 10 sold his 27th dummy of the game and put a prop in under the posts to put the kibosh on that.
Another try each in the fading light was followed by a nasty injury to one of the Bedford players which meant a long delay. By the time he was stretchered off the mercury was falling and the ref ended the game on 65 minutes with the score 25-45.

No need to appologise, however I have to say I am very dissapointed there were numerous posatives to take.
The line out was awsome, every time a ball was thrown in Bedford either got it or slowed it down to a fumble.
There was a wide display of options, short chips, long kicks a good kick chase. crisp passing going to hand. the players made yards repeatedly getting over the game line.
Passion in the defence hitting and clearing rucks never a backwards step.
Ohh hang on that was the Bedford possatives!

2. There's no game on Tuesday
3. There isn't a game on Wednesday either.
4 & 5 follow the same rule!
As for the game, well played Bedford they did one thing well and that was to attack the gap between Joe Ford and Fred Burden hence the try fest. I've seen better tackling from an U12's side.
A couple of pointers to the ref:
1. When playing a pen advantage, when you finally give the pen the pen must be taken from point of the infringement or behind it. Not as in the case of the first Bedford try 10m in front.
2. Players from both sides were going off their feet and sealing off the tackled player which should have been penalised but wasn't.
As for the team management DE should leave with immediate effect as his coaching (or lack of it) is obvious to everyone. He's lost the team I'm afraid as well as the supporters.

The prgramme states that our lot have been practising defence all week?
Perhaps they should try attack next week and see if they can cock that up at the weekend.
Have I ever witnessed a more disappointing game by the Carnegie TYKES? I think not.
Bloody awful doesn't go nearly far enough.
And, a group of Bedford fans stood near me were astounded at how bad we were. They had expected much, much more.

What I dont understand...perhaps someone will enlighten me...are the 'consequences' of calling the match off 15-20 mins early.
I think the game should have been called off earlier at the time of the serious injury.Not only was the ground too hard but it was OBVIOUSLY too dark too continue safely.
However we judge Leeds' woefull,break-up for x-mas early, performance there are two things to note.
Leeds were playing a bit better in the second half.It is quite 'imaginable' that they would have scored another try and notched up a valuable bonus point.
Bear with me here....It is not totally 'unimaginable' that Leeds may have scored two converted tries in bonus points.
If we fail to get into the play-offs by one or two points where does that leave us and today's decision. Is the refs decision on a team's fate and the scorline FINAL or can we appeal to RFU.

If the Rotherham game was anything to go by, I don't think bad light could have been an issue. The light at the (premature)end of the match was vastly superior to the Roth match at half time.

Game should never have been started IMHO. Richard Beck injured shoulder again hitting the hard ground in first half. Thoughts are with Sacha Harding as well.

For what it's worth I agree that the game should never have started. If the pitch was unplayable after 65 minutes then it always was.
But surely Leeds, Bedford and the Ref had the decision to make about that- and between them they agreed to start the game
I agree with Selby Kev in that we could have socred at least another try in the time left and piced up a 4 try bonus point (though we could conceivably have let in another 2 or 3 tries too)
But after what I saw (or didn't see)at Roth last week, it wasn't obviously too dark this afternoon - but there is a point to be learned about kicking off at 2pm at this time of year, on a ground with no floodlights......
But there are 2 separate issues here, whether the game should have started or not is one thing. But it did - and we were poor. Lineout woeful, and our inability to tackle was dreadful. That cannot be blamed on the pitch.

Can someone who refs enlighten me on a technicality? If a player is incapable of tackling (due to distance, not ability), are they allowed to step towards the attacking player anyway?
If they are not, it explains why Leeds' players consistently stand aside when opposition players are running at our mid-field.
If they are, whoever claims to have taught the players defensive drills this week need seriously educating.

One massive positive today, we didn't play long enough to get a yellow card, although I think we were getting close to it.
At least none of the players will need to go to Mothercare tomorrow, they bought enough 'dummies' today to last a long long time.
Without taking anything away from Bedford, I can't recall a worse display from Leeds for a long time, and that includes the drubbing at Quins when Gary Hetherington apologised to the fans after the game.
COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

Our thoughts for the Bedford captain who suffered a badly broken ankle and a dislocation. The pitch was certainly too hard in places by the time the game was stopped. Bedford were streets ahead of our lot in speed ability and physicality. Saracens have strength in depth when they can call on most of this lot.

Only Baldwin (No. 9) and Spurling (replacement hooker) were the Saracens players in the squad. The only other one to feature this season is Ransom.
I felt Leeds were a little unlucky with the game being called off early, as they probably would've got the 4th and bp. Even though the Blues would've had a few more tries themselves to stop another bp or win.

Thanks for your kind remarks. We could have got a BP but undoubtably would have had even more damage to our points difference and our confidence.
We are looking at a management that moved this game from fortress Headingley Carnegie, with undersoil heating and floodlights, to Otley where you were equally familiar with the facilities.
Good luck to you if you continue to perform at this level.

I was looking forward to seeing the new pitch at Headingley as well. Possibly see it later in the season?
The Leeds attack was the 2nd best I'd seen so far (after Nottingham) against us. Your 22 (I think) looked a good ball carrier as well.
Blues were pretty ruthless in attack, which was helped by some average defence!

I find it hard to believe you think Leeds would have scored more tires, and taking into account Bedford had won the game before half time, I'm even futher shocked some would take solace from such a bag of shite if we had pulled a bonus point. No doubt another session of taking possatives will appear so as not to dissapoint the team. God help em, I'd have made them stand on the pitch for the half time they were that crap. There were only a couple of players for me who stood up for Leeds toady in any shape or form. We were embarassing and a bonus point for the pathetic showing the team gave would have been far more than they deserved. It was like boys agains men AGAIN out there today, the team and the coaches should be embarrased and very very quiet this week after that.
I wonder how many will take the trip to West park next week for a Leeds carnegie spectacular road show?
I spotted John Bently at half time, He's got more passion for rugby at his age than anyone who took to the pitch today in Carnegie shirt.

Agree JDH, but we should have been learning all season. How many, on here, have been critical of our midfield tackling, and today it was shown up for what it is? Again, if we can see it, why can't the coaches? Those of us who were critical after letting Bristol back into the game despite having a big lead, are now being proved to be correct, because today our attacking threat after the first 15 minutes was non existent.
Despite our good form of late, we have lost to the three teams who sit immediately above us in the league, and two of those defeats have been hammerings.

i dont get upset with leeds losing anymore, especailly today, bedford were far better drilled in the backs
the forwards did chase the KO but JF kicked it deep, when he kicked it to the left it was much shorter
mike and george ford in the crowd too talking to GH
the backs will need time to get sorted. JF isnt great at tackling and always goes to high and JG is still new to RU

The refs decision to call the game off was surely the rugby equivalent of a boxing ref stopping the fight?
Bedford looked a decent side and totally outclassed us.
Bizarrely there is a 300 piece jigsaw of their fly half, who looked a class act, on Amazon for £18.
