Pointless exercise

There was much discussion on the funbus and before the game about the Doncaster jinx. We never win at Doncaster! The sun was shining and the pitch was in perfect condition. I managed to convince my fellow funsters that there is no such thing as a jinx. However I was not able to get into the pre-match team talk so the players still clearly think they cannot win at Castle Park.....
Rotherham stuffed Moseley, utilising their big pack , shoving the Brummies around the park. When our teams came out I noted that our front eight were much bigger than their Nottingham foes. I also noted that none of our front five looked fit. The front row and Green were all carrying excess weight . Hannay looked like he was not ready for sharp end action yet ( recent operation?).
Last season came flooding back as we gifted possession to the Greens at every opportunity. When we had the ball Hughes whipped it out along the back line -ok. Lucock started but only lasted ten minutes before Griffin came on to batter the Notts defence. To no avail - the Greens held firm. They also scored every time they had an opportunity. Hughes kicked three goals to keep us in touch but by half time we were 18-9 down and looking clueless.
Hampo and the ref stuggled with the new simplified scrum rules although Notts dropped a few leading one wag just behind me to to comment Binding? You couldn't bind even after a week in a pickled egg factory!" Same wag then showed us up in the halftime goal kicking competition
The second half saw more of the same. Notts went further in front before the ineffective Hughes was replaced by the lad whose name gets you a good scrabble score: Alex Lozowski!
Lozzer immediately improved the distribution and looked every inch the 10 we have craved. When Notts had a kickable penalty and opted for the corner we managed to steal the lineout. Goss gathered the ball behind the posts and shipped it to Lozzer who jinked into a gap and was off like a scalded cat. The Doc, languishing at fullback for most of the match, got up the wing alongside him and took the pass. With defenders closing him down he popped the ball back inside for young Alex to crash over out wide. A one hundred metre move, executed to perfection. Lazzer added the extras from out wide and we looked like a rugby team.
Several chances came our way. The pass was ruled forward when Goss was clear with the line at his mercy. As the clock ran down we got a kickable penalty. Jacob opted for the corner. We fluffed the lineout and the whistle went. The opportunity to secure a losing bonus point was spurned so we got nothing out of the game which was what we deserved.
Had I not witnessed the breakout try I would have come away from Castle Park quite depressed. However that glimpse of magic left me with some hope. We played worse against Bedford at Otley and came back better for it. If we iimprove ( selecting Lozowski will help) we will get something at the Mennaye next week. If not then we are in for an autumn of discontent.

I wonder if our new conditioner from Sale focussed on bulk rather than speed, because they all look like they've lost a few metres.
Onwards and upwards!

Another example is his comment "if you lose you shouldn't get anything", well I am sorry Mr Lowes but the rules are that you get a point if you finish within 7. It doesn't matter if you feel you shouldn't get anything, 1 point could make a massive difference at the end of the year.
Hughes on the offy
Lowes on the offy
If you want to punish yourself here are the "highlights".
Regarding the new scrum laws, play to what the ref says!
Regarding decisions, take the points on offer when given on a plate and don't go for glory which in fact, wouldn't have gained any further points points in the table.(We now have nowt!) Jake, please note!
Keep hands off the ball in rucks and keep hold of the damn thing when it's open play.
Any or all of thee would be a vast improvement on Doncaster!
Up the Carnegie TYKES !
Hughes plays too deep. That's why Loz makes a difference. Defensive line not good at all and very inconsistent with players either fyling out of line or holding back (Griffin).
Strange decision not to kick at goal at the end.
All in all a usual first game of the season for a Leeds supporter !
Note Pirates beat Bristol...Friday should be good???? Sorry, I mean 'interesting'.Hope The Donny Experience is soon history!!
Onwards and Upwards...just hope we are really rattled??!
Having said that, I am more than concerned about our cover in the backs. Yesterday we had a winger at 15, and a scrum half, and a centre, on the wings. Arguably, our best centre was left on the bench. If we have to play players out of position to cover for injuries, then clearly we are short of cover.
COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.
How did Jonah look?
The few times we played heads up rugby we scored a try and were denied another. We had the bulk of posession but did sod all with it, we crabbed across the pitch losing ground and then were bettered at the breakdown.
It was a disappointing start and instead of building on the positives of last year we are back to square one.
I was concerned at the selection, strength in depth allows for you to cover losses like Stevie without compromising the backline. Sadly moving Doc does that, he did a decent job at 15 but he should be on the wing. Goss is a centre who has been pushed into the wing berth, Holmes is a good prospect but again he isnt an out and out winger. That is where the likes on Curtis, Tinckns and the likes were needed, however because of mistakes and problems they were let go.
I am confident that things will improve but, if I was Lowes, I would have spent the entire summer reading, watching and lsitening to everything Union I could find. To say the penalty count is irrelevant loses him a huge amount of credibility in my eyes and makes me wonder what other "basics" he fails to grasp.
Oh well, at least we have an easy game next Friday....................

And then in Hughes' post-match interview, he says the penalty count killed us.
the backs cant play if we dont dominate irrespective of how much ball we have
I am sure the lads will be fuming and make amends on Friday.
By the way is the game on the telly? Might be able to watch it if it is.

Looking forward to seeing any of you that can make Friday night

Have to say I'm a little disappointed at the level of critiscism that JL is getting after just one game.
I've just listened to his post match comments on the offy and at no point does he say the penalty count is "irrelevant", nor does he say it "doesn't matter". When it was put to him that the penalty count must be a worry he replied that it wasn't and, to be fair, after one game I wouldn't describe it as a worry either. If we're shipping penaltys game after game then it's a worry.
Also, having given the players the responsibility of making decisions on the pitch you'd expect him to back them in public. Unfortunately Jacob has started with a poor one, a fact which I'm sure JL has made him aware of in private.
As has already been said, it's far too early to judge him yet.
Lets put it right against the pirates on Friday night.
Team has been selected for Friday so lets see if the changes make a difference.
the try we scored was as good as any i have seen in a long time by the way
I think JL is very uncomfortable being questioned about Rugby Union on camera which has led him to make the odd throw away comment he probably regretted later for example "you shouldn't get anything if you lose".
There's plenty of time for things to click into place though.
If I've learned one thing about Championship rugby it's that it's not how you start the season that counts but how you finish it.
Remember Daryl Powell giving Marshall two pages on how to pass the ball.
Not the most endearing way to inspire a World Cup Winning All Black, (and his team mates) would you think?
(Maybe he didn't that all blacks were not boxes of dark chocolate, but quite good rugby players who generally are reasonably good at catching, holding and passing the ball?)
Up the Carnegie TYKES !
