Pirates - matchday thread.

By WW
September 20 2013

It will soon be kick off time in Penzance. The teams have been announced and we are ready for the first round proper of the 2013/14 Championship season. Leeds Carnegie can count themselves lucky to have a nice easy starter at the Mennaye........

If you cannot make it to the match  get tuned in to radio Cornwall and add your thoughts and comments to this thread as the match progresses. Hopefully the lads will make amends for last weeks defeat - we shall see.

C'MON LEEDS!

Good luck everybody. Wish I was there great place to visit. Hope our team have kept off the pasties and have decided to listen to the ref this week. Whatever the result I would like to see Alex L given a bit more game time this week. For me Hughes did not play badly last week but AL looked to have pace and a touch of class.

Totally different performance to last week. Worrying how squeaky bum it was at the end - should've been an easy win with the conversions and penalties missed.

Great win... especially down there...credit to whole team. Lets just hope we can repeat that performance...like Gel...worried about conversions and penalties which very often decide the game...kicking practice 24/7? Did Hughes have a good game otherwise?

Good result to take to Bedford too. Wouldn't want to go there was a 2nd loss.

If you saw last week's Bristol v Pirates match we were as dominant as Bris were without all their mistakes. Pirates had their chances but, unlike last week, did not capitalise on them.

You say Gel it was squeaky bum time at the end. Was that due to poor kicking from the tee, or an iffy defence?

Pirates simply upped their game, we dropped off the game. I was suprised how much time was left - no clock at all to go by on the TV coverage. Tincks so very nearly broke away. They must've had 20 phases (or more) before we finally did something to end the game (sorry can't really remember - finally relaxed and a bottle of wine has kicked in. (Sm63) what was good was our discipline in those phases - so could easily have given something away and who know what could've happened then.

I'm sure all of you who are there will be celebrating long into the night. The Pirates MB says Leeds were deserving winners, so we have now got to build on that.
There are still a number of injury concerns, once they are sorted, we should be a force to be reckoned with.

Congratulations boys from a Pirate fan, You deserved that win but you need to do something about your goal kicker, he was pretty poor to be honest. Mike Myerscough was a tower down the middle for you (he's a Cornish lad you know!!) and your backs were quick, trouble was we kept giving you the ball and with your speed and good offloading we contributed to our own downfall, take nothing away from you it was a deserved win. Have a great season

We lost a very good kicker at the end of last season to a Premiership club, sadly he is not even in the squad for their game this weekend.

Great result. those of us who were there were treated to a display by the Leeds team which was akin to the best performances of last season. OK the win could have been cosiderably bigger had penalties and conversions gone over, but what the hell, on my fifth visit i finaly got to see a win.

The players were clearly delighted and showed this by individually coming over the Leeds continged and shaking hands with all of us. Well done Leeds!

Celebrations went on well into the night with the Cornishmen trating us to a medley of songs ending in an unusual version of Ilkey Moor Bar'tat.

The lineout was much better last night, even stealing one of theirs at a critical moment. Sources close to the club told me that the players had been verbally encouraged to do a much better job than last week. Hughes was very good in the loose but his kicking was atrocious. Burdon was my man of the match but Buzz was a close second. The forwards seem to have finally realised that we have backs and our backs were outstanding; Holmes and Burdon ripped them apart. Doc was a real fullback for once too - covering well in defence and always where he needed to be in attack.

If they play like that every week we have nothing to worry about. smiling smiley

I noticed in the YP report, Leeds did not use all their replacements. Maybe we have now reached the point whereby we can no longer tell the time when the replacements come on, they are used as and when, and not just because they are there.
If goal kicking is a problem, why not bring Lozzer in at 15, and get Doc. back on the wing. Hughes can then concentrate on being a good 10.

COME ON LEEDS.

As said before ...a magnificant improvement on Donny...in all departments...and now a Bedford scalp would really cement our intent for the season.Fantasic win which in no way should be underestimated.

But tend to agree with Hax... we have got to sort out Kicking soon...or it will potentially come back to bite us in the bum...and raise the stress levels?

One extra penalty this week would have knocked a point off Pirates...and one from last week would have temporarily put us in second place...and 2 points clear of Pirates...

my 'point' is ....that we really must be 'clinical'. It may be early days but all these little things could slowly start to add up??

Before we played Scottish at the end of last season and started our late run...we were almost out of the frame...musn't happen like that again!

Writing this from my desk at work- had to schedule a project at work for this weekend which meant a weekend in Cornwall was out of the question.

Just watched the highlights on the offy we look a completely different team to last week- so pleased to see this.

Hughes's kicking might be a bit of a concern, but he looks like he gives us a lot more in the loose, which I for one am very encouraged by.

Anyway what a difference a week makes- onwards and upwards!!!

Hope they doo well in the forthcoming season and wee meet up again in May, in the play offs.
