Yorkshire Carnegie lost 32 – 23 at home to newly-promoted Doncaster in what was an attritional and very messy match. As I struggled to get to the ground in time for the 2.30 kick-off due to a 50 mile cycling club run, it was disappointing to hear that Chris Jones had failed a late fitness test, and our wafer-thin squad was going to be stretched even further....

The match started with a scrumfest and then some rugby started being played after about 10 minutes. And it was Donny playing it. Deservedly they went into the lead but, for me it was in a mysterious manner. After a sustained period of pressure they put in a grubber kick in the right hand corner which seemed to be reached first by a Carnegie player (and this seemed to be confirmed by the replay on the big screen) However a penalty try was awarded, not sure what for and also not sure if a yellow card was involved. I was concentrating on the play, was completely sober (I take the responsibility of match-day reporting seriously, and anyway I didn’t have time to get to the bar), had the benefit of the wise counsel of the South Stand Ultras, but remained mystified. I will speak about the match-day experience later.

So 0 – 7 and Carnegie were lacking intensity at this stage, missing a few tackles, although the stand-out player so far was Phil Neilson. But a fight-back ensued, and following a Donny yellow card Jon Clarke got over on the left, the conversion hitting the post. So 5 – 7. Donny started to penetrate our defensive line using Route One, with their forwards crashing, carrying and offloading well. A deserved penalty to them and it was 5 – 10. The score was evened-up to ten all when our sponsored player, David McIlwaine, scored an unconverted try resulting from a lineout, following an arrogant kick to the corner from a penalty. Nevertheless play was messy, and without trying to be one-eyed, not helped by inconsistent and frequent interruptions by the whistle-blower. Then came the defining moment of the match, which sadly was not a brilliant piece of skill or a magical piece of play. Near the end of the half Donny were on the attack in our 22, we gained possession but an attempt at a quick counter attack resulting in Donny regaining possession (possibly also knocked-on) and our scramble defence resulted in a tip-tackle from Phil Neilson. Red card and the penalty scored, so 10 – 13 and 14 men against 15 (though Carnegie had scored two tries to Donny’s one).

The half seemed to go on forever, though, the Almo watch timed it at 53 minutes. Before the whistle went for the final time in the half (no doubt needing replacement as it was wearing out fast) Leonard made a dangerous break only for his flick pass to go into touch just sort of the try line and Donny tried a 60 metre goal kick which was about 10 metres too short.

Life is too short for me to go into all the players’ comings and goings but at half time Tideswell and Bainbridge came on for Hooper and Walker and it looked as though our resources were now at their limit. Carnegie upped the pace at the start of the second half but the outnumbered attack struggled to find an overlap and then suddenly there was Lee Imiolek walking through the Donny posts with time to celebrate before grounding. Game on? Well no, not really. 17 – 13 proved to be high point, the 14 players could not keep up the effort. Subsequently Donny had a three man overlap to score on the left and a Carnegie poor lineout throw gave them a run-in near the posts. We scored a couple of penalties (Leonard showing a steady nerve and respectable range) but the final play saw Carnegie drop the ball over or near the line to give Donny victory 32 – 23 and no consolation losing bonus point for us.

Inconsistent and frequent whistle-blowing unfortunately continued as a theme from the first half. In contrast, credit to Donny, who took their opportunities as they arose. Not sure what we can learn from this match, but I would like to close on some personal comments on the match-day experience for the paying punter; more a general rant than a criticism of Headingley. The referee’s decisions played a huge part in this match and they were not clearly signalled to the crowd by the referee, with no voice announcement or big-screen explanation either. A new-comer to rugby would have been completely bewildered and probably not come back. Contrast this with rugby watched on the TV and there is a referee cam, you can hear the voices of the refereeing team, and it is so much easier to understand what is going on. I know that it is not practical to have a Sky or BT panel of experts on hand, but surely there could be one person, wired to the referee who could pass on announcements at least saying what the offence was and by who?

Do you think the referee knew what the offences were. Little or no signals. Made it hard for even the die hards to understand. Good write up of a poor game. Even Yorkshire post are baffled at the penalty try offence.

Thanks Almo. Good breakdown. Yup the whistle blower was a mysterious force... to be sure...decisions brewed in ancient alchemy! Perhaps a few more yards of ale would have given us a bit more insight.

But only we can take responsibility for our game...and we were not good enough on the day....and it is hugely disappointing for the many reasons outlined on other threads.

Need to see a different team take to the turf next week. Call in the monks...a period of quiet reflection and meditation urgently needed!!

Anyone want a season ticket? Only joking!

Come on Ye Tykes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say that the penalty try and yellow card were correct, the Leeds player didn't touch down in goal but swept the ball dead as a Donny player was attempting to score. It is illegal to knock the ball dead in goal in Union whereas it can be done in League so by denying the Donny player an attempt at scoring the offence warranted the punishment given.

Phil's red card was harsh but yet again was correct by the current laws. Saying that the ref was pedantic and his hand signals were poor to say the least.

Good report Almo of an awful game. Be careful what you wish for re wiring up the ref. Both home games have had stoppages for the officials to be re-wired, something else that seems to go wrong at Headingley.

COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

Nice write up Almo, Thanks.

Maybe the darkest time is just before the dawn - I hope.

The most worrying thing of all (and there are a few contenders) is the miniscule attendance. Against local rivals with a plethora of free tickets to be had, under 2000 is a real cause for concern.

Nice review Almo,
I only disagree on one point - I do not think the red card was the defining moment in the game. Our attitude compared to Donny's determined the outcome. If I am honest, in my days as a Middlesbrough football fan, I have seen the same lethargy when a Man Utd or a Chelsea visited the Riverside, only for them to be undone by their lack of respect for the underdog opposition. Even toward the end of the game yesterday, desperate for points or even a losing bonus point, we chose to kick rather than go to the corner and be brave and Oli Goss registered his own disappointment at this tactic by shaking his head visible for all fans to see. We were second best to every ball and we were shell shocked by Donny's speed and motivation which I assume came from them wanting it to be known that Yorkshire Carnegie may not, in fact, be the biggest or best team in Yorkshire. Completely agree with all you said about refereeing decisions, strangest game I have seen at Headingley for that.

Nic it is alright to say we should be brave and go for the corner, but our line out was poor yesterday, we'd have probably thrown it to Donny. Take the points on offer, always come away with something. There were still 7 minutes plus stoppage time on the clock when Leonard kicked that penalty, ample time to go for another try, had we been good enough.

COME ON LEEDS.

exactly right haxby-always take the easy points
don't forget we were a forward down
as to the ref -he obviously doesn't understand scrums-the laws on wheeling and feeding were ignored and how on earth he could award a penalty try and sin bin the winger and then send off our hooker is beyond me

I don't think we should make excuses for complaining about the officiating when the standard is unacceptable. We complain about players if they don't play well.

The fact remains the referee was simply not good enough, particularly in his reffing of the scrum in the first 10 minutes when he clearly should have been penalising the Donny front row - Lee Imolek murdered Quigley. If he had done what he was supposed to do we wouldn't have been in the position to have been given the yellow card.

On the subject of the yellow card the point is that neither referee nor touch judge got a clear view of the incident. That is confirmed on the highlights. All they went off was the remonstrations of one of the Donny players. Irrespective of whether it should or shouldn't have been a yellow card that's not really the point. They didn't see the incident to be able to correctly give one. Dangerous precedent if a referee simply reacts to what an opposition player says.

On the red card according to the letter of the law it may have been correct but I don't think either side would have been concerned had it just been a yellow as there was no malice at all.

I thought the ref was average at best, but to blame him for the defeat was short-sighted at best. Too often we messed up good positions, or execution was just not good enough. Donny kept the ball alive much, much better than we did, their error count was smaller and their passion was just so much greater. I got the impression that this Yorkshire thing had really fired them, both on and off the field.

The decision to grubber kick on our own 5m line when we turned the ball over, which resulted in the red card, summed it up and was a shocking bit of decision making.

I'm sure we will improve but our lack of skill and passion was depressing at times.

You have absolutely hit the nail on the head there CD.

And I wasn't blaming the ref for the defeat by the way just making justifiable observations about the cards.I would say though that I do think things go in cycles throughout the season so hopefully we'll get our fair share of outcomes in due course refereeing wise.

I would assume there has been some very frank and open meetings at the club this week, especially when reviewing the tape.

As GM said its was an unacceptable performance but better happening now

Sundays game should be interesting

On the subject of the 'grubber' incident, the way I saw it was that he was in the process of dropping the pass and tried to recover by making it into that ill-fated grubber. Anyone else see it that way? To do it deliberately would have been pretty reckless.

I didn't see it that way at the time and I think the highlights video backs up my view.

Nice one Almo. Difficult to report on a game that could have been summarized in two words, "aucking awful".

As for the match day experience, it has been described well on another thread.

I haven't seen the highlights yet Competitive Dad, so I'll go with your view of the grubber. Sadly for me, that turns it from an unfortunate error into the serious error of judgement.

Otherwise I thought DM was one of our brighter lights, notwithstanding his poor body position when taking the ball into contact mentioned elsewhere.

Can't agree about DM being one of our brighter lights I'm afraid. Maybe I'm watching a different game but my own view is quite the reverse. I'm hoping it's because he perhaps hasn't played much rugby last season and he's still finding his feet. After one and a half (!!) preseason games and 4 Championship matches one would perhaps have hoped for more by now ?
