Pirates matchday thread

By WW
October 4 2015

This weekend has thrown up some great fixtures at both ends of the league. As form starts to sort itself out the 3 Yorkshire clubs are all in the top 7 with Roth and Carnegie still to play this afternoon.

London Scot   5 4 0 1  18

Yorks Carnegie 4 3 0 1 16

Doncaster       5 3 0 2 16

Bristol             4 3 0 1 15

London Welsh 5 3 0 2 15

Bedford          5 3 0 2 15

Rotherham T  4 3 0 1 12

After yesterday's thrilling encounter the Scottish Exiles are top of the heap. A last minutes dg sealing the win over their neighbours. Welsh sit 5th in the table unless Rotherham upset Bristol at Ashton Gate where the home side will be wanting a bp win to go clear at the top. Unless, that is , Carnegie goes to the Mennaye and whups the pesky Pirates by 4 tries which will see us back on top by teatime.

The sons of Kernow have only won 1 game so far and are down near the foot of the table. A win for them is essential to kickstart a drive up the league. Another defeat for us will see the promising start to the season turn decidedly mediocre.

We will be providing updates and comments on here from kick-off time at 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Why we turning down kickable penalties? Take the points, win the game. As long as we do that we've nothing to worry about!

Better than nowt though I suppose

Converted. 10-14 at halftime. Sounds like parity up front. Pirates scored a belting try and we capitalised on mistakes. We have spurned 9 points from pens.

I hope we are not being arrogant!

The commentary is bad but nowhere near as dire as the half-time wailing and poetry

If it's the 3 pens at the end of the half you're referring to WW then it's not really right to say we've spurned 9 points because they all happened in the same passage of play and if we'd taken any of them the others wouldn't have followed.

We spurned 3 points 3 times but came away with 7 and are leading at half time as a result.

Apologies if you're referring to earlier pens, I missed the first 20 mins(Sm134)

I think there were at least 2 phases of play where we spurned 3 points, but thankfully we did score in the end.

I have got Leeds commentary by the way- Taylor Prell is part of it.

Long delay due to an injury to the Pirates s/h

He's OK - was awake in hospital. Apart from broken bones, worst injury I've seen. Nasty.

Not a pretty match at all, the conditions did not help which makes for all the kicking away even more unacceptable.

But, a hard place to go, crap weather, we're still not firing on all cylinders and we still came away with a BP win.

I'll take that after the weekend of misery we've had!!

Agree with Zan

But

I get the feeling we're riding our luck a bit.

Donny coming up on Friday, who we always struggle against, and then Bristol. Think we'll struggle at Ashton Gate.

We need to stop conceding so many penalties.

We are top of the table. We have just come away from one of the hardest grounds to win on, and got a bonus point victory.

Lets give them a little bit of credit?????????

Yeah, fair comments Almo and Carnegiette

I said in the Scottish preview it's all about the winning and it is.

Also, to be fair, I haven't been to a game yet this season so have no first hand experience of our performances so far.

I just get the impression that we'll have to do a bit more than we're currently doing to trouble Bris.

Not the best game to watch but a win is a win. Those listening on radio presumably were not made aware of the conditions at the ground. There was a Gale blowing and it made complete sence to spurn the three points on offer following penalties. There was no guarantee where the ball would finish up! What was infuriating was the kick tennis in the first half. Kicking into the wind and finding touch then having the ball returned with interest. Not good. Once we started running with the ball the game changed. Not pretty but a good win in difficult conditions. Well done the team!

Thanks Bobba! The weather was mentioned on the radio, but I guess it is hard to picture unless you're there.

Leonard's touch line conversion sounded good

Yes, credit to Harry, his conversion was nice and true. However, clearance kicks had no guarantee to remain in the Duchy let alone on the pitch. The way was to keep the ball low and in the little bit of shelter that the stand provided. It took us a long time to realise that. When we did, we became more effective along with the realisation that keeping ball in hand helps.

A nice thing about the visit to the Pirates was that Our Chairman David Dockray along with Mike Bidgood wandered over to the small group of assembled supporters pre match, introduced himself and openly chatted with us. Post match, in he big tent, spent some time with a few of us talking of the future hopes of the Club and answering our questions in detail and honestly. He even bought a round! Thanks David, much appreciated and a pleasant change.
