Holy Moseley!

This weekend the free-scoring Carnegie boys are back in LS6 for their penultimate league match of the first session of the 2015/16 Championship season. This week our visitors are the pride of Birmingham - Moseley!
After 7 fixtures Moseley are 10th in the league table with 2 wins and 3 bonus points. Last weekend they beat bottom side Ealing. On the opening day of the season they managed a win at the RAG against London Scottish. In the closed season Moseley acquired 2 players who are familiar to Carnegie fans. Lock Harry Casson and stand-off Glyn Hughes are both wearing the red and black shirt this season. Hughes, in my opinion, was part of the halfback combo at Headingley that gave us such scintillating rugby 2 years ago. Since then he had some time at Wasps and has ended up in Birmingham. Why he is not a Carnegie player remains a mystery to me.
Our own standoff, Harry Leonard, has made big improvements to his goalkicking since he joined the club but I still worry about his decision making in open play. I am not the only fan who gets frustrated when we kick possession away. We have some explosive backs. Harry needs to light the blue touch paper a bit more often.
Our success so far, we are second in the league table, has come from the fine displays of the pack. Newbies Schofield and O'Donnell have added significant beef to the set pieces and our driven maul has become our main scoring tactic.
Last week at Bristol our defence was poor. Casson, Lucock and Holmes were all at fault as the Bristol backs shredded our paper thin defence. No doubt when we have a settled backline this will improve. It would be good if we could shut out the Moseley attack. I would be happy with a win delivered without too many unforced errors and penalties. Hughes would relish the prospect of kicking a hatful of goals at Headingley. No doubt Brush has been addressing the issues this week.
I am going for a home win, whether it comes from driven mauls or sparkling bac ks moves. I expect a bonus point but think that Moseley might just get one as well.

Great preview WW. Looking forward to getting back on the horse this week with, hopefully, 5 points.
In Harry's defence I feel he is probably playing to instruction rather than personal choice.

I agree to a certain extent, We seem to kick nearly everything away when we are in our own half.

It's what used to commonly be called percentage football. Simple and effective but reliant upon a big dominant pack.
I have never been a fan because that only gets you so far. As an extension of that argument you only have to look at how effective southern hemisphere teams are in RWC, even Argentina these days, who have broadened their horizons and now look like a good all round team comfortable with ball in hand all over the park
This old style is typical of what is wrong with much northern hemisphere rugby. More adventure is needed. We always have to remember that whilst it is a sport it is also there to entertain.
As I have said before I don't think Harry (or any other player who kicks) can be blamed because one would assume he/they will be playing to instruction. Clearly thus far it has been relatively effective (although difficult to watch) and hats off to the coaching staff for that. All I am saying, and have said previously, is don't expect the backs to "click" straight away as a unit as, when and if they ever get a consistent supply of ball as it will be a little alien to them.

I completely agree NNS.
Fortunately we still have people who remember how good our handling was under JLo. I wonder about Jonah at FB. Does he prefer this? He had more licence to come in and bamboozle the defence when he was on the wing. Also I felt CG was beginning to look good with #15 on his back

You may be right Eli but at least he sees more of the ball at full back......would he touch it much if he was on the wing? And he is without doubt our best back .....

I suspect that someone with Hughes ball-in-hand skills and Leonard's tackling and kicking from the tee abilities, would be a first-choice Premiership player.
They are both young players - we will be able to judge who has the brighter future: this assumes both are picked.
I have fond memories of Glyn setting our exciting J-Lo era back line into play, but serious reservations that keeping the ball in hand at all costs is a credible way to the Premiership.

Hopefully windy on Sunday. Having learned a lesson in first half at Cornish Pirates ball will be kept in hand and run with. One can but hope!

I liked watching glynn play but he was either hot or cold. It was loz that really got things firing.

I'm sure Harry is playing to instructions, but he is often put under pressure by the poor service he receives. The kicking will improve massively when a certain player gets here, but even he can only do so much if he's hanging about waiting to get the ball!!

Don't hang your hat on that certain player. Different game, different type of fitness etc etc etc. Takes a bit of getting used to. That said if anyone can give it a go it will be that certain player !

People talking about kicking the ball away instead of running well it goes both ways if they run and mess up they should have kicked. Just the way it goes i think back to the days of Braam Van Straaten and would be more than happy for him to kick with that boom off his boot...im rambling without a point here a bit anyways best of luck to the lads on Sunday hope for a good win

Having studied the form this season my prediction is that Moseley will find it difficult to compete up front and we'll simply strangle them at source. If they get some decent ball though they have some really threatening backs. As for Glyn I'd be much happier to see him lining up in a Carnegie shirt. Real team player who made the players outside him look good. Top scorer in the league for a team that is third from bottom is some feat.

I think a pragmatic gameplan ie territory is fine if played well. The fancy stuff can come later once we have a playoff place.

Not hanging my hat on him NNS, but nobody knows how to kick at Headingley like he does. He knows how to win, and that in itself could be the biggest difference he makes.

I am deeply worried by Sinfields imminent arrival. As NNS says this is a completely different game and playing 10 is pivotal to the functioning of the backs. There will be a lot of pressure on Brush to play KS no matter how badly he adapts to Union. Cards on the table I think it will be a disaster.

Cannot agree there TT.......at this level in the championship I think Sinfield will be in a different class to some of the opposition he will encounter.

Oh you of little faith. I'm not really a RL fan but Sir Kev obviously has a "George Ford" type of ability to take on the opposition line and set something up.

I just have this image of badly judged kicks, charge downs and intercepted passes as the space from the set piece is closed down faster than in League. Person all I don't see the crossover at 10 working and there are very few, if any, precedents. Like I say - I hope my fears are badly wrong.
Anyway- that's all for another day and this is a thread about Moseley. Good to see Brush giving Dudman the nod. I think that will liven things up. It's obviously part of his plan to rotate and try different combinations across the squad in the games he thinks will be easier. So I'm fully expecting 5 points today. C'mon Carnegie

Weather should be ok, crisp morning in north Leeds. Light cloud and 10 degrees or so later but with the clock change the early start will be useful as it will be getting dark by 5.

Dudman in particular & Joel Hodgson when he came on really sharpened up the delivery to our backs and they took it like milk to a baby.
Well done them.
It really showed that with good, quick service and none of the @#$%& about we have become used to earlier in the season, our backs can tear holes in defences.
