The sharp end

Yorkshire Carnegie entertains Jersey on Sunday in the semi-finals of the B&I Cup. Whatever happens then the two teams will meet again at the end of April in the final game of the regular season. We have a minimum of 5 games left to play. If we lose them all our season is over. If we win them all then another 5 games are available - cup final and playoffs. Win all 10 and we will be promoted as cup winners. Yes we are down to the sharp end of the proceedings....
Last weekend we steamrollered Moseley in the cup. Our visitors on Sunday are a tougher proposition. Reflecting that Brush has gone for his strongest team from the players available. The pack selected is probably the best we can put out ( apologies to Asbo's fan club). Certainly the backrow is the one I would choose and Beech & O'Donnell are prodigious scrummagers. Schofield is good for an hour and Smith has been our best lock for some time.
Behind the scrum Pilgrim has upped his game and is paired with KS - a reflection on the progress Sir Kev has made in the 15 man game. If this combination plays well on Sunday they could be the first choice for the following 9 games.
Casson and Forsyth get the shirts in the centre but last week's bonus point was the appearance of Fred Burdon after an 18 month layoff which means that they will both have to be on their mettle if "Eric" is to be denied a starting place in the coming weeks. I hope that he gets more game time this week. For me the return of Beck and Burdon have given me the greatest cause for optimism of any event this season ( and, as you know, my glass has been half empty for quite a while now).
A further cause for joy is the form of Taylor Prell.His performance against Moseley has earned him another start on Sunday. With the return of Jonah our back 3 certainly have a cutting edge.
So, five games or ten? I think that the side selected for Sunday has enough clout to see off the Islanders. We then get back to league action with the visit of Bedford. If we win that and play well in so doing then ten games is on the cards. Who knows what could happen? Anything!

Such a situation only confirms my long held view, that the team that finishes top of the Championship should be promoted, but the powers that be dictate otherwise, so let Donny, Bedford and us, go for gold.
