This weekend the last game of the regular season coincides with the best away trip in the fixture list. For those of us who remember flying off for European fixtures then Jersey is the nearest we will get to Europe at the moment...
Last week against Nottingham the lads secured third spot in the league with play-off games against Donny. The other results meant that Jersey could not overtake Bedford so this week's game will have no bearing on the league. Consequently the contest might not be quite as intense as if there was something other than pride at stake. Brush may even be tempted to rest a few players for the following weekend when the play-offs start. If Jersey are playing for pride then we will have to meet them head on or risk finishing on the wrong end of a big score.
At this time of year when next season's squad is being assembled the game provides an opportunity for players who have not had much game time to impress Brush and perhaps secure a contract extension. As things stand only 3 departures have been announced. The game also provides those who are going with a chance to say goodbye. This applies equally to the Jersey squad where Sam Lockwood is making his final appearance before he goes to the Prem with Falcons. Brush also has the opportunity to blood promising Academy players. Green and Wright have already made the step up to Championship rugby. Will anyone else get their chance this weekend?
For the travelling fans matchday preparations start early. There are flights to St Peters from Manchester, Liverpool, East Midlands and Doncaster which are all near enough for Yorkshire supporters to make use of. Friday is the favourite day for flying out , returning on Sunday making a nice weekend break with the added benefit of the cultural attractions of the island of Jersey.
Normally at this time of year the island is basking in the warm spring sunshine. On Saturday the forecast is for cold north winds so for those tourists from Yorkshire it will feel just like home. The island has over 200 restaurants which will provide ample shelter from the weather as well as some mighty fine pubs. The Lamplighters, in St Helier, is the pick of the pubs but I seem to remember that wherever you end up drinking people are always interested in rugby and love to chat to visiting supporters. The Jersey clubhouse is also very welcoming, opening on Friday evening to greet visitors from the mainland.
It will come as no surprise that I expect the match itself to be a high scoring affair. It could be too close to call so I have gone for a draw - our first of the season!
