HEADINGLEY KNIGHTMARE

Doncaster Knights took a big step towards the RFU Championship play off final with a comprehensive 30 points to 17 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie in the first leg of the semi-final. They were helped by poor discipline from the home side, who until later on in the match could never get to grips with their lively visitors.

2 penalties in the first 5 minutes gave the Knights the platform to score the first try, and when Cusack converted, and then added a penalty, Donny were on their way. Carnegie were falling foul of the referee far too often, and on 38 minutes, Charlie Beech picked up a yellow card, and the Knights crossed again by the side of the posts. Another conversion, but on the stroke of half time, Sinfield reduced the arrears with a long range penalty.

Yorkshire started the second half brightly, but only 4 minutes into the half, a number of reset scrums close to the home line resulted in a penalty try for the visitors. The lead was extended to 27 – 3, after yet another penalty, and the hosts looked down and out.

There were 15 minutes left, when Hodgson and Green were brought into the fray, and for the first time in the game, the momentum swung in Carnegie’s favour. Burrows made a rampaging run through the defence and looked a certain scorer. He was hauled down just short but the ball was recycled and Oli Goss was on hand to crash over. Hodgson drop kicked the conversion, but another penalty restored Donny’s 20 point advantage.

With the clock ticking away, Carnegie won a line out close to the line and Chris Walker was driven over, the conversion making the score 17 – 30. The hosts threw the ball about with abandon looking for another score, but it never came, and they now have a mountain to climb in the second leg next week.

Another dis-appointing performance on the big stage. The penalty count cost them dearly today, as much in terms of lost territory as in points conceded. Another concern was that once again, our only plan seemed to be ‘give it to Buzz’. He was watched like a hawk, but we seemed devoid of alternative ideas.

Not too many contenders for a man of the match, but for his efforts in the last 15 minutes, which have at least given us a lifeline, my bottle of pop is going to Joel Hodgson. An unexpected result, but a thoroughly deserved win for the Knights in front of a crowd of 3102. Our Yorkshire rivals are now red hot favourites now to reach the final.

Having sat through the debacle called a game of rugby, it seemed that only one team showed up and that was Donny. The penalty count was horrendous, surely someone in the coaching side reviews the ref and works out what his favourite pens are??? We were pinged at breakdowns and scrums time and time again. Once the ref knew who was the weaker pack he never bothered looking elsewhere. Donny certainly had him sussed but also didn't give him the opportunity to give pens. Well played Donny but they were blowing at the end after Max Green and Hodgson got the team moving. I'll be praying that Pilgrim breaks a nail and can't play next week cos he is and has always been dire rubbish (I can't write what I want to say about him cos kids might read this).

A good accurate, if slightly sad to read, report, Hax. But I won't shoot the messenger.
Ref did us no favours but that highlights a weakness all this season - not playing to the referee's interpretation of the laws.

Well done for writing Hax - not sure I could have brought myself to do it.

I too would start Green and Hodgson. But unless our forwards front up more, it will be a pointless exercise.

Donny were far far superior, but only one team wanted the final whistle to blow and it wasn't us!

I guess I should have seen this coming. I was gutted yesterday after allowing myself to become over-optimistic. Back in the real-world we all knew it wasn't gonna happen. I have been critical of the performances this season and effectively wrote off our chances of making the play-off final a couple of months ago. Oh and I realise there is a second-leg next week but anyone who thinks we will over-turn a 14 point deficit against that Doncaster team at Castle Park is definitely smoking something.

Before kick-off I was surprised at the number of knights fans who has made the journey and their passion was evident as the teams were announced. In contrast there was silence from the HC faithful. We aren't bad fans we have just had nothing to cheer all season. Even when we are winning it's dull, boring one-dimensional rugby played dispassionately by a team giving 70%. The more I think about this the more I think the blame les at Redpath's door. The emphasis is on execution and control, there is zero creativity fear of doing things wrong and no winning mentality. This leads to players not thinking and playing what is in front of them and a lack of positive contribution. This is like watching Scotland play when Brush was 9. Don't know about you lot but I have come to the conclusion he's the wrong man for the job. His selections defy what we see work on the pitch, he fails to get the team revved up, and his signings have been poor.

I have never questioned the coaching staff, just the players, but unfortunately I don't know how we got Brush, and agree don't think he's the man for the job. This isn't a knee jerk reaction. The team has about as much passion as a two month past its sell by date lettuce. You can make excuses as much as you like but the team has no interest when they are on the pitch. I cant understand how Asbo doesn't get picked when he has more desire and put his body on the line more than anyone else and we play the guy thats off at the end of the season. Sorry for me Brush needs to go coach a team in the highlands where he might be more passionate.

Play people staying who are doing it for their and the clubs future, with one exception Hodgson who is a credit to himself. I would say Williams would add some bulk but maybe that's too far.

Completely agree with everything said, I too was at the game and was so fustrated to watch this awful game of rugby. Interestingly on the official Brush comments we didn't perform well in the set piece, scrum or line outs so would love to know why he didn't bring ASBO on sooner? Why leave Walker on who was having an under par game and is going anyway so it really doesn't matter to him if we get promoted or not.
Think its poor team selection again from Brush and agree with time trial he's the wrong man for the job. My friend is a Sale supporter and told me he wasn't good enough for them so begs the question why is he good enough for us if we are pushing for promotion?
Still feel fustrated today; big performance is needed next week

Couldn't be there due to family commitments.. Listened to game on the radio...what a mess. A hard write up Hax??Tend to agree with much of what Time Trial had to say and some of what Mad tyke didn't say!!

As a team we are over martialed and under trusted. Was it Dave Alred...Johnny Wilkos kicking coach that I heard on the radio this morning...about the importance of cultivating initiative, risk and creativity. All I heard on the radio following the game...was a fear of making mistakes...which is when you make mistakes!! A fear of playing our own game...wanting not to lose more than wanting to win...If a little reckless at times...at least we had ambition under JL?Can Brush find the passion from these players to lossen up and play rugby...not just painting by numbers.

Hodgson as I have been saying will be a terrible loss..as he sparks off so much creativity and all that can be good about Carnegie. He has really come into his own as the season has developed...learning from every mistake

I'm probably in a minority of one..but I personally think we can pull this off against the odds and turn it around. Our scrum has been really good all season...what happened??? can we please remember for next week!!

We just need to play as a team and be fearless..play our game and for each other. All Donny did was to play simple effective rugby...did the basics well. we stuttered at 9 and 10...so we need to think really hard about selection. One certainty...Hodgson must have a full 85-90 minute game!!

I am backing a resurgent Leeds to take us up...starting next Sunday!!!! See you there

Just watched Brush's post-match interview. I was astounded that he didn't recognise the superior kicking of the Doncaster half-backs. Their box-kick and chase was exemplary- just ask Holmes who got bundled into touch several times. The kicking to touch from their 10 was outstanding finding space behind the defence and running the ball into touch. Great distance from tight angles into touch. Kick-off hanging to give time to challenge for the ball -compare that to just hoofing it down the pitch way beyond a chase... Take a look again Bryan!

There have been a few comments about an apparent lack of passion from our team. I understand that this is how it appears to be when we are losing, but I, for one, do not doubt the players will to succeed. In fact I feel they are sometimes trying too hard.
I am sure all the players, including those who are leaving and those staying, feel gutted to have lost like that.

I wonder if the Yorkshire name change has added extra pressure to the team - after all, if Donny get promoted we will have to become their feeder club.

Thanks Hax

I was disappointed at the performance but not really surprised as we have not really performed all season. We still have a slugger's chance though next week. Nothing to lose. Go for it.

I wondered when you would stick your beak above the parapet bird lover. I assume you will be leaving this board at the end of the season to go and support whatever team Pilgrim plays for. You think we should be positive about the performance on Sunday? For a club that has a stated aim of being the premier club in Yorkshitre to put in a performance like that was unacceptable. As a fan I pay for more and expect more... I hate to think what the board members thought of their investment.

Oh and there's no need to PM me saying I know nothing every time I am critical of certain players

I have watched Leeds, Tykes etc all since 1992. I can only say IMHO that Pilgrim has been the slowest delivery of any of the scrumhalfs I've seen at the club. Unfortunately with KS at fly half the RL premise of a pivot to backs moving on to the ball at pace cannot happen because Pilgrim doesn't get the ball out quick enough, the result of his slow action means that defences are back in place. I also felt that Richard Beck was a bit of a lightweight on Sunday. We lacked grunt and a bit of doggedness up front up. Once Max Green came on we hit Donny at pace and they were blowing.

JDH old mate, you're going to have to let this go. You might never see Kev play again butnyou should remember that before he arrived we were so fast paced that our number 7s had a scoring rate comfortably higher than the #10 who never really saw the ball. I spent my time back then arguing that we should be developing a fast tempo game (like the Prem!)bv- but the collected wisdom on here argued that the rolling maul was just the thing to win the play-offs. Joe taking over the #10 shirt hasn't set the pulses racing. Although I liked his ability to drop a goal from the wide mid-field, I'm not expecting him to get involved in the heavy traffic with searing breaks like his brother.

I think Harry played ok at the start of the season. Agree it's not just 9 and 10. Who's been in the 12 channel has been an issue all year hence burdon being back in the frame.
I have made my ford feelings known.

I cant for the life of me think how the slow ponderous delivery , crap out of hand kicking and passing only when all selfish options are closed down are the fault of the 12.
Of all the positions on the pitch the 12 and 13 have suffered most from the 10 issue. Burdon is back in the frame because he's a squad member and injuries as you would expect.

I didn't say it was the 12's fault for what was happening at 9-10. But we haven't had a decent 12 that could do anything when they have had any good ball. I suspect brush thought casson would be the nailed on performing player.

How many centre partnerships have we had this season? How many times has the same pair started?

Fitz was the stand out early doors but he can never do a full season

If we don't see some significant changes in the squad then I feel that Brush would be exhibiting stubbornness to the detriment of the result.

Unless we win by 14+ points of course........

JDH, my mistake I thought when you said 12 has been an issue all year you were pointing the finger at the 12's.
My point is that whoever has played there has been playing has been handicapped by the poor service all year. Continuity of players has not been Brushes fault but continuity of tactics and style is under his remit and he has failed.
Several posters have made the same point consistently from the start of the season you just cant expect to turn it on without the required continuity.
I don't like posting negativity and I'm not very good expressing my points so ill sign off ,
Hears to next season.

So who can picked to come in and transform the pack that has been too ineffectual? Williams comes to mind and then bring Beck on later to ratchet up the speed?
I don't think it's the squad he picks it's the strategy.
We've missed Fred, but the fast tempo is needed to run the legs off Donny. We know we can't out-muscle them.

Re this weeks team. Jersey may have been a dead rubber, but as I have stated elsewhere, the stand out players were Williams, Leonard, and Hodgson. They should ALL have been involved last week, and should be involved this. It is only half time, we can still turn this around, but, only if Brush goes for gold, stops being stubborn, chucks any favouritism he may have out of the window, and picks a side that has flair and unpredictability about it. If he does that, and we lose, then fine, we'll have given it our best shot, but maybe, just maybe, we will be celebrating at Castle Park long after the Donny fans have gone home.

COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

I think Phil Nilsens aggressive edge and absolute commitment to the cause might be appropriate for this game.
