Alan Dickens joined Tykes from Sale at the beginning
of season 2002/2003, initially on a temporary contract. His play in the
successful first half of the season was sure footed and efficient and his
contract was extended until the end of the season. For much of it he was
competing with Derek Hegarty for the starting spot at scrum half, although by
the end of it he had established himself in the position.
Contracted again for the 2003/4 season he expected to compete with newly arrived
Clive Stuart Smith and an opportunity to prove himself came when the latter was
injured early in the season. However it was not to be and as we write Alan is
recovering from a hand injury.
Alan is an efficient scrum half who does nothing flash but does have the gas for
the occasional break to keep the opponents napping. As a result he has scored a
number of key tries for the team.
Apart from his play his main claim to fame came on TV when he was at the bottom
end of an altercation with his old chum and sparring partner at Sale, Bryan
"Basil" Redpath.
