My Best Day of the Holidays

It was a cold and windy day. Me and my friend Caroline went to the railway station and got on a train to London. On the train Caroline said ‘Look, that’s Little Ant and Dec’. She was pointing to two boys. But I didn’t know who they were. Caroline seemed excited.

We got off the train in London and caught the underground and got on another train and got off it at Twickenham. There were lots of people wearing blue and black shirts. They spoke funny.

We went into Twickenham stadium. It was very grey. We went up loads and loads of steps. Then we went to our seats. We could see the whole of the pitch, but it was very small because we were very high up.

The match started. Leeds Tykes were playing against Bath. It was the final of the cup. We wanted Leeds to win, but we secretly knew that Bath would win.

The referee was a man called Mr Pearson. People kept shouting rude things about him.

In the first part of the match Leeds were very good. My heart was thumping hard. I was nervous. One of Leeds’s good players got hurt and limped off. The Leeds fans near me were upset and buried their faces in their hands.

Then another good player for Leeds went off. The man next to me started groaning quietly. But suddenly a small player for Leeds called Gordon had the ball and he kicked it very gently over the top of the Bath player and another Leeds player called Christopher catched the ball and fell over and all the Leeds fans jumped in the air and started shouting loudly and laughing and hugging each other.

Then for a long time the Leeds fans were biting their fingernails and saying rude things about the referee and burying their faces in their hands and watching the match through their fingers.

But then a man called Mr Malone, who plays for the Bath team, threw the ball to a Leeds player called Andre. And Andre ran very fast to the other end of the pitch and touched the ball down on the grass. The Leeds fans were all standing up and shouting and singing and screaming and jumping and waving their arms and their flags and their scarves. Then it was half time. Caroline saw a man doing a wee against the wall and she didn’t think it was very nice.

When the game started again the Leeds players did lots and lots of tackling and the Leeds fans did lots and lots of screaming and whimpering. The score was Leeds 20 points and Bath 12 points and then Gordon kicked the ball into the crowd and Mr Pearson blew hard on his whistle and the game was finished.

A man gave the Leeds players a big shiny cup and the Leeds players were very happy. One Leeds player called Diego got a bottle of champagne and shook it up and sprayed champagne on some men in suits.

And I was very happy and Caroline was very happy. And the whole of Yorkshire was very, very happy indeed.

And that was the best day of my holidays.
