Engage – The Fall and Rise of Matt Hampson

No match stats. No fixture lists. No results. No boring anecdotes. No ordinary Sports Biography.

Most of us will be well aware of the tragic incident that took place at Franklin’s Gardens on 15th March 2005.

Many of us will vividly recall those early days and months, when we were desperate for any news on how Matt was faring, wondering what on earth we could do to help. And although this book gives an insight into the trials and tribulations that Matt and his family had to endure, it’s so much more.

Paul Kimmage is an entertaining writer and Matt is a very, very funny young man. It’s a winning combination. However, a word of caution. This book should carry a health warning. - be careful where you read it. That is, unless you aren’t embarrassed to be seen with tears coursing down your cheeks, grinding your teeth in frustration, or laughing out loud. The Lawrence Dallaglio/lamppost incident particularly had me crying with laughter. But there is also some uncomfortable reading, the bleakest moments, the doubts, the mental and physical lows. Incredibly this isn’t just a book about Matt or even his extended Rugby Family. It’s also about many others who, for a variety of reasons, found themselves facing similar situations.

Even if you’ve never heard of Matt Hampson, aren’t that fussed about Rugby or hate Leicester Tigers, just read the book. It might not change your life, but it might put the bad bits into perspective.

As someone who has got one of these signed by Matt himself, I can thoroughly recommend it to everyone, with the added bonus of helping many others from the proceeds.

An incredible book. I read it on a group holiday and everyone on it has borrowed it since having heard and seen my reactions to it. Inspiring. Brilliantly written.

From a tigers-centric point of view, that kimmage says he came in to writing the book hating us and ended with respect is a huge compliment. The books reflections on Tigers and the RFU speak for themselves.

If anyone reading this thread hasn't got a copy, get it on the Christmas list now!
