Super Sarries Go Ballistic Leicester Are Atrocious

Schalk Brits: Try Scorer
By Large
May 9 2010

OK, I adnit that the headline is a little bit OTT, as Sarries weren't ballistic, nor were Leicester atrocious, although they did have an off day for sure, but I have been saving it up for 10 years while Sarries searched in vain for that elusive first win at Welford Road. So please forgive me as that first win has now come and I am ecstatic and speechless in equal measure.

The two Sarries tries in this 32-23 victory came from Leicester mistakes. Chris Wyles was the beneficiary of an Alesana Tuilagi howler that will make the blooper reels for years to come.

In attempting to deal with a high ball that was going to land just outside the Tigers 22, the big wing undid his earlier good work of scoring the opening try of the match - which was a belter as the home side carved its way through the Sarries defence thanks to strong running and quick recycling at the breakdown - by missing the ball completely before it sat up perfectly for the onrushing Wyles who gathered and ran in untouched to score at the posts.

Schalk Brits scored Sarries' second two minutes into the second half after he picked off a speculative pass from the otherwise excellent scrum half Ben Youngs and out-sprinted the young tyro to touch down.

Glen Jackson kept punishing the Tigers indiscipline with five penalties from six attempts and converted both tries for a personal haul of 19 points, with the final three coming after Tom Croft was yellow carded by referee Andrew Small for a cynical obstruction of a Moses Rauluni pass inside the home 22.

Up to this point Leicester were still right in it following Marcos Ayerza's try mid way through the second period but with the England flanker in the bin, Leicster had to step up another gear to try to overhaul Sarries, and their desperation led only to more mistakes and a penalty concession with four minutes left 45 metres out. Up stepped former Tiger Derick Hougaard who duly delivered with a monster of a kick that would have landed the other side of the roundabout had the A&L stand not been in the way.

Vitally, this put Saracens nine points clear and although Leicester, back to full strength for the final two and half minutes, pressed, Sarries held on and closed out the game for an historic win.

Scoring sequence: 0-3 Jackson pen; 0-6 Jackson pen; 3-6 Staunton pen; 8-6 Tuilagi try; 10-6 Staunton con; 13-6 Staunton pen; 13-9 Jackson pen; 13-14 Wyles try; 13-16 Jackson con; 13-21 Brits try; 13-23 Jackson con; 18-23 Ayerza try; 20-23 Staunton con; 20-26 Jackson pen; 23-26 Staunton pen; 23-29 Jackson pen; 23-32 Hougaard pen;

I feel pretty sure I have heard that headline before some time in the last 10 years, Large.

However, it would have been reversed and the last bit directed at Sarries rather than the opposition.(Sm136)

The headline came from Scottish football when Caladonian Thistle beat Celtic and was 'Super Callie go ballistic, Celtic are attrocious!'
