An quiz to keep us going during the extended close season
By TonyTaff
December 4 2020
A quiz to span at least part of the interregnum until Sarries play again: Points will be awarded for correct answers submitted to the unofish email; any answers posted on the message board will result in a 35 point deduction, which may be arbitrarily trebled!
The scoring system, marginally less fiendish than that in F1, is 3 points for the first contributor to get the answer correct, 2 points for the second contributor, and 1 point for the next five contributors who get it right; Only responses, within 7 calendar days of the question being posted, will be eligible, as the answer will be posted thereafter. Four bonus points are available for anyone who gets three consecutive answers correct, regardless of whether their alacrity also garnered points.
All questions refer to the men's first team/squad unless explicitly state dotherwise.
Please include your nom-de-web within the email, if it is not obvious from your email address.
Suggested questions are most welcome, again to the unofish email. However, the fiendish quiz-master's decision is final as to which are included.
Don't expect glittering prizes to arrive by Christmas, any Christmas!
Endless compromises, courtesy of PRL, are likely to be in plentiful supply.
If anyone doesn’t know the unofish email, please PM me.
Keep an eye out on the messageboard for announcement of the new questions, as this will start the 7-day clock.
Good luck

Still plenty of time to garner points in Q4. Not many Englishmen beat the All Blacks on their début!

Jonny Browne has extended his lead at the top of the leader board.

I shall await a call from the Daily Fail to answer the allegations... 😄

Hint: It's nothing to do with there actually being a Scotsman on the field! A rare sight in a Lions test, these days
There were in fact two, back in the last millennium - Tom Smith and Rob Wainwright, though neither were protagonists in the final play. It's a long time since Sports network paid anything!

As Sarriebone asked for the unofish email address, but has not submitted an answer to Q4. Accordingly, the deadline for answers to Q4. has been extended until 10:00am tomorrow.
Jonny Browne secures 4 bonus points for three consecutive correct answers. However, his lead is far from unassailable, as his answer to Q5 is wrong, so maximum points are still available regarding the events in Durbs.
Get your answers in, the season has a long way to run, as I plan to keep this quiz up until our season threatens to splutter into life.

Many people remembered Jeremy Guscott's drop goal which took the score to 15-18 and was the last score of the match, but it was not the final play. Indeed, Lions fans endured what seemed an eternity of South African attack. A penalty kick or drop goal would have drawn the match and enabled SA to tie the series with a win in the final test; to their credit, the Bokke went for the win (they had missed every kick in the match, including three conversions - anyone remember Sarries four unconverted tries against, I think, Bath?), the non-kicking fly-half Honibal, chipped into the Lions' in-goal area where Lions full-back Jenkins touched down. The clock was well past 80 minutes, but, in those days, the clock wasn't stopped for injuries etc., and few observers knew how much time was left Perhaps Wingnut did, as he kicked directly to touch, frustrating any attempt by the Boks to field it. These days, of course, this would have resulted in a Boks' scrum on the 22 in front of the posts, against a Lions team that looked exhausted. However, Jenks knew the law as it then stood, and the Lions secured the series.
The tourists were hammered in the final test.

As we seem now to have a stream of matches, this quiz will close on Saturday night. There's still chance to have a go at Q7.
Did I miss a question somwhere, Tony??

If that's a gentle nudge that I am supposed to publish the results, I have taken the hint!

Funnily enough it wasn’t a gentle nudge - I would have asked you directly, Tony!
