END OF SEASON POLL 2019-20 PART 1

So this is what you’ve been waiting for:- The Results of this very strange End of Season Poll. Understandably we had less respondents than usual but enough I think to go ahead with the poll. So without further ado, here we go:
- SARACENS PLAYER OF THE YEAR :
As one person said “we were very spoiled for choice even in this strange and difficult season”. Indeed this one was close with 3 candidates accounting for the majority of the votes. In 3rd place was the ageless Richard Wigglesworth (“his match control enabled our less experienced players to thrive”). The runner-up is a guy who is now down at Bristol where he has gone from strength to strength: Ben Earl. But your winner (and not just cos he’s a bit taller) is the peerless (“the best player I’ve ever seen and somehow he just keeps getting better”) MARO ITOJE
- SARACENS YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Apart from somebody who voted for Mako (I know he looks older than he is but “young?”) and honourable mention for Dom Morris, this one was between Ben Earl (again) and our winner by quite a long way (“the next Barry John”, “Immensely talented and mature beyond his years”) is MANU VUNIPOLA
- SARACENS OLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Once again our 2 old stagers took most of the votes, with honourable mention to Vincent Koch and the perennial Jackson Wray. The runner up was Richard Wigglesworth (“worryingly still our best scrum half at the end of last season”) but your winner (and it really couldn’t be anyone else could it) is our Captain Fantastic BRAD BARRITT
- SARACENS UNSUNG HERO
Some interesting suggestions here: Jackson Wray, of course (“if he’d found an Irish granny he’d be an international by now,”) the ever dependable Baz Barrington and stand-in captain Tom Woolstencroft were all in contention, but this year’s winner (“a bloody good pro and true team player, turning in a great performance in Paris despite losing his father in tragic circumstances during the preceding week”) is CALLUM CLARK
- SARACENS FIND OF THE SEASON
Once again some interesting suggestions. Alec Cleary was nominated as “a breath of fresh air” (I’d agree with that) and Tim Swinson has been a bonus but the vote was split between 2 contenders. The runner up is Manu Vunipola but perhaps a little bit surprisingly our winner (“I can’t understand why this highly talented man was languishing in Spain when we picked him up”) is JUAN-PABLO SOCINO
- FAVOURITE SARACENS PLAYER
So this one is down to personal choice so not surprisingly we had lots of suggestions. Maro Itoje, Ben Earl, Jamie George (“his performances on the field and his clear love for the club”), Alec Cleary (“purely for the unearthed video of him in his younger days explaining how best to survive a zombie apocalypse”), Brad Barritt all had their supporters but the winner (“he just gets better with age”) is ALEX GOODE
- BEST SARACENS LOANEE
A new category this year (and hopefully for 1 year only). Someone nominated Calum Hunter Hill (who was at least technically a loanee to us) but unsurprisingly it is the 2 guys who are taking the west country by storm – so much so they have found favour with Eddie!The runner up is Ben Earl, which means the winner (“he’s been stunning for Bristol”) is MAX MALINS
8. BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFROMANCE BY A SARACENS PLAYER:
There were nominations for Max Malins’ performance against Brizz (after which he sadly got injured but showed his new masters enough of his talent for them to take him on this season) and for Elliot Daly’s debut performance against Ospreys where he “oozed class”, but there is no doubt about the best performance. This years’ winner is for his performance in the Heineken Cup Quarter-Final against Leinster, stand-in Fly-half extraordinaire ALEX GOODE
9. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN OPPOSITION PLAYER AGAINST SARACENS
2 players stood out in this category. Many plaudits for Finn Russell in the Heineken semi final but the winner is Wasps’ (I know, 2 Wasps’ players winning in our poll!!!) evergreen, classy and invaluable fly half-come inside centre who pulled the strings so brilliantly both at the Ricoh, and especially in the win at Allianz (“always a class act even in Wasps’ colours”) JIMMY GOPPERTH
10. SARACENS TRY OF THE SEASON
Max’s efforts against Brizz gets a mention as does Duncan Taylor’s against Wuss and Maro’s against Racing (in that must-win game) but once again we go back to that fabulous day in Leinster (oh wouldn’t it have been great to be there). “Sarries have a rare foray into the Leinster half, when good movement and a great off load by Duncan Taylor, puts the ever youthful Goode through a gap in the line to sprint through to score the try, after throwing a classic dummy pass.” Yes the winner (“it gave us belief that we really could knock Leinster over”) is that try scored by ALEX GOODE
