LYON - please place all match related comments here

By The Saracens
December 15 2022

Round 2 of our European Adventure takes place in the French city of Lyon on Saturday. Lyon is well known to most Sarries fans, a fabulous place for a weekend and the site of our first Heineken Cup victory over Racing 92 in 2016 (albeit at the Grand Stade de Lyon). We returned to Lyon in January 2019 with a 28-10 victory over The LouLou!

The 2 clubs could have met in a European Final last season. Lyon won the Challenge Cup, defeating Toulon (who overcame Sarries in the semis) in the Final. Lyon are having a reasonable season in the Top 14. Currently sitting in 6th place with 7 wins from 12 games.  Lyon took a trip to South Africa last weekend where they met The Bulls. Having trailed 28-0 at one stage, they rallied in the 2nd half and the score finished 42-36 with Arno Botha scoring 2 tries and Liam Coltman, Ethan Dumortier and Kyle Godwin also going over.

The Lyon squad includes a number of overseas players, including our own Joel Kpoku, Fijian wings Josua Tuisova and Noa Nakaitaci, New Zealanders Toby Arnold, Josiah Maraku, Lima Sopoaga, Fletcher Smith & Liam Coltman, Australians Kyle Godwin, Feao Fotuaika, Georgians Davit Niniashvili & Beka Saghinadze, South African Arno BothaJordan Taufua, Samoan & Argentinian Francisco Gomez Kodela. (Salary cap, what’s a salary cap?). There are a few Frenchmen in there too: Demba Bamba, Dylan Cretin and Jean-Marc Doussain to name a few. This will not be a walk in the park!

I don’t expect many changes in the Sarries’ team. They will have had another week together which will hopefully make a big difference. The forecast is for it to be cold again but dry with light winds. Sarries do tend to raise their game when up against the best – Saturday would be a good time for that to happen!

The officials are from Ireland with Frank Murphy in charge, assisted by Peter Martin and Oisin Quinn. Brian McNeice is in the TV truck. Hopefully the coaches have done their research on Mr Murphy. We can’t afford to get on the wrong side of the man in charge out in France.

Saracens need another win – something which is never easy in France but this team is well capable if they play to their potential. Hopefully they will.

Lyon are entering into the Spirit of the Season and are encouraging supporters to dress for Christmastide. There is also a collection point for donations of shampoo, soap, razors, shaving foam, cream, feminine hygiene products etc at the Entrance (before security). There will be a fans photo booth, snacks, wine, sweets, hot drinks and mulled wine on sale (I seem to remember the food was pretty decent during our last visit to The Matmut), an opportunity to meet some of the Lyon players and lots of children’s activities. After the game: “DJ Philippe Marcotti will be accompanied by a saxophonist, a percussionist, vocalists to perfectly launch your Saturday night. A musical and visual Christmas Show not to be missed on the Place des 22 from the final whistle until 9:45 pm”.

Sadly I’ll be watching on TV. Good luck to all those of you negotiating the vagaries of travel these days what with train strikes, border-force strikes and weather delays. Enjoy Lyon, it’s a fabulous place. If you get the chance do the Traboule Tour of Old Lyon and treat yourself to a Quenelle. And shout loud for all those of us back home.

Would have loved to go but the week before Xmas and so many strikes in prospect put me right off, possibly many others too. Shame , would like to do an away game in France, only one I havent. I wonder if a lot of fans think the dates are too close to Xmas?
Edinburgh looks easier as you can go under your own steam by car so strikes dont matter unless the wee Crankie has border guards up yet!

Strange article in Times today re Kpoku, headline obviously click bait, says
Joel Kpoku: Saracens an inclusive club? They didn’t look out for me

Suggests he was a bit jealous of Maro and possibly realised Sarries had a lot of possibles in his position so moved away utilising his French language skills, seemed a sensible move and he’s done well since leaving, not sure why its such a big issue the club hasnt been in touch since he left. Suggests anyway he’s up for the match

Click bait- thank you. That is the expression which sums it up perfectly. I also was scratching my head after reading it. People were nice while Joel was at the club, bit of a pain being in Maro’s shadow, not particularly close to anyone now and he’s very happy at Lyon. Looks like a sub editor has taken a dull article and spiced it up.

There's a piece in The Mail (sorry to swear!) too. Media have their own agenda when it comes to Sarries. Kpoku a bit daft to burn his boats though. Money talks ....

Strong team, CHH has been great so far this season so I feel a lot more confident with him stepping in for Maro but it always worries me when we don’t have a lock on the bench. Need Ben and Theo to step up this week, they were both a bit quiet last week.

It's an odd one, he says no-one from the club has reached out to stay in touch but also admits he hasn't either

He's a young man who perhaps has said to the journalist things that he did not really mean in the way he said them, but there are these paragraphs in the article which jar:

!He did not leave because he was out of work, though. He left, and this is again where he is an outlier, because he disliked Saracens. It is rare for anyone to leave that club and talk of their negative experiences, but Kpoku does.

“Words can’t describe the excitement and the fire in my belly to come up against these guys,” he says. Does he speak to his old team-mates much? “No, to be quite honest, I don’t speak to anyone at the club.”

Was that a conscious decision? “Nah it’s nothing like that, it’s just they didn’t make the effort to contact me, so I didn’t see the point in me doing the same.

“As an insider there at the time, you think it is a very inclusive club and whatnot. Not to bad-name them but, as an outsider, that speaks volumes doesn’t it? In terms of the lads not even looking out for me.

“Culturally, being in it is great. Being outside it . . . I learnt a few lessons, shall we say, at the club.”

With Kpoku, let's be honest, he'd still be a second string lock if he had stayed. Whatever helps him sleep at night, he made the right move for him. On another note, is there any rule in the artist formerly known as European Cup about fielding deliberately weakened teams? Glos away at Leinster is one thing, but Lyon resting people at home is something else!!

What .a difference from last week against very formidable opposition. We won a lot more collisions, stole some lineouts and turned over some rucks. Excelllent win away.

Unbelievable heart at the end there to see it through with 14 men and one lock. Theo with the crucial steals but I also think Billy was heroic today, love it when he plays like that. Fingers crossed for CHH, hopefully not too serious, gutting for him after really improving this season.

Like others I thought when the red card came with 15 mins to go that we would probably end up losing but the boys really hung in there. In the forwards I thought our back row was pretty decent this week and in the backs I thought both Owen and Elliot had very decent shifts. A good result and yet another tight finish to keep everyone interested until the end. Was a much better spectacle than Exeter trouncing a Bulls 2nd XV on ITV.

Couple of cheap shots on faz during the game, he handled them brilliantly. Thought he dealt with the ref pretty well too. Didn't get arsey but got his point across when he didn't agree with certain decisions

Really surprised that wasn't looked at. It was a clear swinging forearm to the neck/face which in my view looked like a yellow. Penalty at the absolute least. If it had been the other way round there would have been endless replays. I agree that Owen dealt very well with the ref and overall the penalty count must have been hugely in our favour certainly in the first half.

It was an absolute outrage that the French geezer with hair got MoM particularly when Theo outplayed him throughout and basically won the game for us by stealing the ball from him in those two defensive lineouts in the last 10 minutes or so. Lyon didn't even get a bonus point! I hope he was suitably embarrassed collecting his medal. For me MoM could have been any from Theo, Jamie or Elliot. Thought IVZ looked lively again too.

I am not sure I can take much more of this though - every game is a total nerve jangler. We're going to lose one soon surely.

Well done to those who made it to the ground. Looked a bit bit bleak and very chilly.

Comments stolen from Fb

"Spoken with someone who spoke with Joel. Words had been twisted by dodgy journos who want to make a name for themselves (unfortunately). Joel hasn’t bad-mouthed the club that has made him in rugby union (from London Skolars rugby league). It’s just more Sarries-bashing, I’m afraid."

"Joel was happy to sign this shirt for La Meute (Lyon OU supporters club) to present to his old SSA (Saracens Supporters Association) sponsors yesterday and is still injured. He gave me a big hug and I said I had cancelled my subscription to the Times (a journal that thoroughly dislikes Sarries) and he spread his arms and said ‘oh mate’ and shook his head. I was able to reassure him that those who know him can see through that stuff. He stayed with us a long time after the match and we were pleased to see him."

Rather than thoroughly disliking us, it's a complaint of some that the Times runs more articles about us than any other club. and the stories are not on the whole negative. There are a lot of Sarries supporters among the commenters, too, some from this board.

This ^
When a referee shows they don't know the Laws they are supposed to be refereeing there's not much you can do but smile, say "yes sir" and get on with things. For the referees benefit a tip-tackle is a penalty offence. The manner of landing determines the sanction. A tip with a controlled-landing as in that case is still a penalty.

I thought Lozo was lucky not to see something in the game. He pulls the player off Farrell and there's a little pushing then he swings up. Not sure about any contact but if there was he's probably in trouble. No complaints but that the cheap shot on Farrell, arguably head contact, wasn't picked up just shows how inconsistent the system is.

Clarey can have no complaints but I believe has a good record and hopefully Bello or Judge are finally fit!

So Clarey 3 weeks with possible reduction to 2, Loz one week. Don’t think we can complain about that. More concerned by the injury to CHH, which looked pretty serious.
