Saracens v Sale Sharks Preview

There is no denying it, this one has been a banana skin fixture for us for a while now. Previous years of dominance in this fixture are well and truly over for Sarries. This time around (thankfully) it is not on a Friday night (hopefully we can end the Friday night curse sometime soon!) and we face Sale Sharks at the StoneX on Saturday at 5.30pm. There’s no denying Sale have the edge when it comes to physicality. While their pack doesn’t feature the Du-Preez bros anymore, they still will have us at scrumtime and maultime I think. The Sharks wil arrive in the capital brimming with their own ambition. Alex Sanderson’s side — built around power, precision and northern grit — have very quietly become one of the Premiership’s most complete units. The Sharks’ pack, led by England prop Bevan Rodd and the Curry twins, has been among the most dominant at the scrum and breakdown this term, while their backline offers both physicality and flair through the likes of Rob du Preez, Tom Roebuck and Tom O’Flaherty. Having beaten Saracens twice in the past 18 months, once at the AJ Bell and then at StoneX last Spring, Sale know they possess the blueprint to unsettle the Londoners: slow the ruck speed, win the gain line, and control territory through disciplined, percentage rugby. We need to look to other areas of the field and attempt to beat Sale at a running game. We have a more mobile, fitter pack so we need to use this to our advantage and tire out Sale as quickly as possible. Keep the ball moving and Sale guessing at what we may do next. It’s a match dripping with subplots: Alex Sanderson facing his former club; the battle between Itoje and the Curry brothers at the breakdown; Farrell and Ford renewing their England 10 jersey rivalry in opposing colours. With the weather set fair and both sides near full strength, this could well be one of the standout fixtures of the round 4 Premiership calendar, and maybe the whole season if it turns to be a firecracker. Expect collisions, tactical chess, and moments of brilliance — the hallmarks of two heavyweights who know each other all too well from times gone by.

Set-Piece and Breakdowns

Sale will almost certainly want to dominate in these areas. The scrum could be carnage if we do not sort out our weaknesses as quickly as we can. So far Tietie Tuimauiga really struggled at scrumtime against Northampton in the Cup, Riccioni had a torrid time against Harlequins and I believe Vilikesi Nairau is injured. Selection for the front row will be an interesting call, as for the hooker, well, where to start? Theo Dan’s lineout throwing is still amiss and JG2 has only just come back from mandatory Lions standdown. James Hadfield could be a good option to start with JG to come on and steady the ship if needs be?

The breakdown could again get messy. The Curry bros snooping around, Sam Dugdale making steals, Bevan Rodd and Opoku-Fordjour who are deadly when it comes to rucking… Sale are the team (IMO) who have the most options for breakdown steals

As for 2^nd rows… I think the only plausible option would be Isiekwe and Itoje. We have really missed Maro and his influence both as captain and all around the field. Isiekwe, while a lineout mastermind, doesn’t have the same impact as a disruptive force as Maro does. Itoje v Andrews will be an immense battle, not least because they are both huge at the lineout, but they are both forces of nature at the lineout.

Kicking and Aerial Battle

Ford and Carpenter v Farrell and Malins. What an interesting battle. We face perhaps the trickiest backline combination of Reed, Roebuck and Carpenter, all of whom are immense at the aerial battle and will (95% of the time) pounce on any ball dropped in the backline. Our pendulum in the backfield has had to adapt little recently, what with Tobias Elliott and Elliot Daly injured and Goodey (who we so often relied on) now retired, we could be targeted with the high ball just like how we were at Harlequins. The weather is set to be a forgiving 14 degrees Celsius and winds of only 8-10mph so not impossible conditions, I say this given StoneX is notoriously windy even when, elsewhere, there is no wind. It is a strange phenomenon that seems to surround the ground, a swirling gale engulfs the stadium when a mere few hundred metres away, its calm as you like.

Backline and Attack

Sale, however, bring their own brand of backline firepower. Rob du Preez, the orchestrator at outside centre, thrives when given front-foot ball. His physicality enables him to challenge the gain line, committing defenders before releasing powerful runners such as Sam Bedlow inside and Tom Roebuck outside him. Ford’s presence remains central — even if used sparingly — as his ability to attract multiple defenders opens up space and the other backs can exploit this. I am still disappointed Ford hasn’t been more involved with England over the years, he has been consistently superb. Carpenter’s composure under the high ball and counter-attacking instincts have become vital to Sale’s transition game, particularly when opponents kick loosely. Expect Sale to look for mismatches in midfield, testing Saracens’ defensive cohesion (especially around the gap from 13 to the outfield and wingers) and occasionally launching wide plays off du Preez’s flat passes to release their pace on the edges. Saracens backline looks increasingly cobbled-together at the minute, especially with Nick Tompkins now out due to the positive HIA. Cinti at 13 could help fill a whole, he brings both physicality and pace outside Farrell. I had hoped to see Farrell take on more of a centre role and bring more ‘bish bash bosh’ into the midfield. Maybe I’m alone in this, but he’s a big unit and could punch holes if he wanted to. I will be interested to see the matchup between him and Rob D-P specifically. So much of Saracens game revolves around first phase excellence and immediately breaking the gainline from set pieces, whereas Sale target 2nd phase ball and counter-attacking rugby more. Rightly so, their back 3 has the pace for it! It will be intriguing to see the matchup and clash of the backlines on Saturday.

Defensively, both teams are renowned for their structure and aggression. Saracens’ trademark line speed and rush defence, orchestrated by Farrell, will aim to suffocate Sale’s passing options and force rushed decisions. Sale, meanwhile, employ a slightly more connected, drift-oriented system — relying on their back-row’s mobility and their midfield’s communication to shepherd play towards the touchline. In such evenly matched systems, the difference may come from small details: who wins the aerial battle, who controls the tempo, and who maintains discipline in their red zone.

Ultimately, this fixture promises a collision between two rugby philosophies cut from the same cloth — physical dominance, tactical clarity, and relentless work rate. The scrums will be thunderous, the mauls attritional, and the breakdowns savage for the most part. Yet somewhere in between, flashes of brilliance from stars like Ford, Faz or Roebuck may be the difference. At this level, with so much parity in structure and power, it’s often the side that adapts best under pressure — not necessarily the one with the most possession — that emerges victorious.
