Saracens v Newcastle Red Bulls Premiership Preview

And so we return to the domestic league and the StoneX, keen and eager to rebuild our hopes for a top 4 finish this season. Things really have not been going to plan at home in the league recently – 2 losses to Bath and Exeter at StoneX have dented our playoff chances significantly. I’d say we have had some strong European moments mixed up with many league wobbles. Our win against Toulouse was wonderful to watch, the heavy loss vs Glasgow less so. We really need a confidence booster at home before the international break begins again, and this match could provide the perfect opportunity to do just that. Yes the Premiership Cup will keep our non-international players busy, but it’s never quite the same. Newcastle have, given their sub-par league form, done immensely well in the Challenge Cup and caused a couple of upsets such as beating Lyon in France comfortably and Perpignan at Kingston Park. They did lose quite heavily to Dragons but with a slightly weakened side compared to their usual starting XV. Newcastle recorded their first league win of the season earlier this month with a great victory over a dire Gloucester team (maybe, apart from Harlequins and Munster, the most underperforming team in the British Isles right now?). Red Bulls have also been recruiting aggressively to try and rebuild their squad and climb out of 10th place. Some names who have arrived/will be arriving include Hoskins Sotutu, Rusi Tuima, Franco Molina and Josh Hodge (originally of the Newcastle parish I believe). They will be looking to prove a point and demonstrate that their aggressive recruitment is translating into results.

Key Matchups

I’ve thought up a few matchups which could decide and help to influence the outcome of this game. There are numerous wonderful matchups which we will be watching on Saturday of course, however I have just picked out a few which I will particularly be watching.

The Halfback Axis -Ivan van Zyl+Fergus Burke vs Simón Benítez Cruz+Brett Connon — the control of ruck tempo and tactical kicking will decide territory. Whoever wins quick ball and improves their turnover count will steer the game. The momentum could go to either side really based on current form, but the halfbacks dictate the pace and if we can play at pace, I doubt the Newcastle defence will be able to keep up. The reverse is true, of course. We have a lot of tired bodies right now after playing week in, week out and its getting to that crunch point in the season where injuries may begin to appear.

Front-row & set piece - Eroni Mawi, JG2 and Marco Riccionivs Adam Brocklebank, George McGuigan and Richard Palframan — the scrummage will be a super battle. From excellence vs Toulouse to rubbish against Glasgow, it’ll be interesting to see how our props hold up. Newcastle’s front row is far better than most give credit for, so we will have to watch out methinks. Plus the lineout accuracy will define who gets front-foot ball. Newcastle have been recruiting to beef up the pack and we will see the likes of Oscar Usher and Seb de Chaves in the air. Both enormously tall men who will be tricky to defend against.

Back-row collision - Ben Earl, Tom Willis and Juan-Martín González vs Tom Gordon, Freddie Lockwood and Tom Christie — the physical fight and ruck turnovers will decide second-phase opportunities. Newcastle’s back row does not feature the international pedigree that ours does, but there is a lot of fight and aggression there and we’ll have to have our wits about us at the breakdown. Quick clearouts and quick ball ought to eliminate the threat.

Back three & counter-attack: Elliot Daly, Rotimi Segun and Noah Caluori vs Elliott Obatoyinbo, Christian Wade and Ethan Grayson— dealing with the high ball and quick counters will be key; Saracens’ aerial game could be a route to points especially as we have Calouri and McFarland who are both wizards and can catch balls seemingly only 20 foot giants would be able to pluck out the air. If we can use our back 3 to our advantage and play a smart kicking game, this could become a real area of dominance as the game progresses.

Tactical Considerations

Sarries will try and win this one through two main areas - Territory & kicking control and structural forward phases. Saracens’ first priority will be to play the game in the right areas. We can expect Burke to lean heavily on contestable kicks, touch-finders and exit accuracy to keep Newcastle pinned in their own half. Like all places, the StoneX traditionally rewards sides who manage territory well, and if Saracens can force Newcastle to play from deep, it increases the likelihood of handling errors, rushed exits and breakdown penalties, even with the likes of Christian Wade and Obatoyinbo who have the ability to create something from nothing. This also allows Saracens to build pressure through lineouts rather than open-field chaos.

Saracens are at their best when they are patient. Close-carrying from the forwards, quick but controlled recycling and repeated pick-and-go phases can draw Newcastle’s defensive line narrow. That compression is what opens up midfield and edge opportunities for Tompkins, Daly and the back three. This approach also limits Newcastle’s opportunities to counter-attack and keeps their power carriers tied into defensive work rather than attacking breakdowns.

We could however lose this one through 2 main areas. Breakdown failures and indisclipine. If Saracens’ ruck speed drops, Newcastle will sense an opportunity. Their recent recruitment has clearly targeted physicality and breakdown presence, and slow or messy ball will allow Newcastle to get jackals over the ball or force poor decisions from the half-backs. Saracens have been vulnerable this season when their attacking shape fractures due to delayed recycling and we often get turned over in that 10m-halfway line zone, which is so dangerous as kicks to the corner will lead to points for the opposition. Our maul defence has improved in recent weeks but was shabby at the start of the season, who’s to say Newcastle won’t find a weakness and exploit it.

Indiscipline and penalty counthas become a severe recurring issue. Conceding penalties in kickable zones hands Newcastle easy points and relieves pressure. It also invites Newcastle to build scoreboard pressure without having to score tries — exactly what an underdog side wants away from home. Against a team likely to lean on physicality, discipline around the tackle area and at maul defence will be critical.

I get the feeling that Newcastle will try to win this match through 2 main areas - front-five dominance and physicality and sniping 9/10 play
Newcastle’s clearest route into this game is through the forwards. Expect them to test Saracens early with direct carries, mauls from lineouts and an aggressive scrum approach. Even parity here would be a win for Newcastle; dominance could flip the entire game. Repeated collisions are designed to slow Saracens’ defensive line speed and sap energy from their back-row.

Newcastle will look to exploit moments of fractured defence rather than sustain long attacking sequences. Quick taps, sniping runs from Benitez-Cruz around the fringes and short passing off the base of rucks are all tools to catch Saracens’ defensive pillars napping, something Glasgow really had joy with at the weekend. If Newcastle can generate quick ball, they will try to attack before Saracens can reset their defensive line.

The main areas where Newcastle could lose this match heavily would be Allowing Saracens to control territory and a lack of accuracy/finishing errors. If Newcastle spend prolonged periods defending inside their own half, the pressure will eventually tell. Saracens are experienced at building pressure through multiple phases and will happily take three points if tries are not immediately available. Being pinned back also limits Newcastle’s ability to unleash counter-attacking threats from deep.

Final Considerations
The Red Bulls’ cohesion is still a work in progress. Missed tackles, forced offloads or poor discipline in their own 22 could be fatal against a Saracens side that punishes mistakes efficiently. If Newcastle create chances but fail to convert them, the psychological swing could be decisive. Saracens are always a team that have thrived off forcing errors from their opposition, and today’s team is realistically little to no different.

On the whole, I’m thoroughly excited for this match. It’ll be great to return (albeit very briefly) to the Premiership for a weekend and revisit an old fixture. Realistically nothing will do for Sarries barring a 5 point win. I think we are far past the stage of losing games being an option. The run-in begins at the end of March and it’s vital that we start as we mean to go on into this international break. A good, resounding and frankly reassuring win is needed for both the team and the supporters. Hope to see you all at StoneX on Saturday. Come on you Sarries.

Agree with the above although Ivz will definitely start.

Hope Street is well but seems like not so agree with a lot of that. Dan on the bench if fit and I don’t care if Loz is not fit, Hartley starts at 12 for the rest of the season, get Spink or Hall in if not fit. Or even Daly and give Malins another shot at 15. If we have another young back for them him on the bench instead of Cinti because I’m not sure what he adds right now.

It’s a must win but I care very little at the moment because getting top four is a)beyond us and b) we’ll get munched if we get there.

Theo M
JMG
Willis

Bracken
Noah
Burke
Hartley
Loz
Roti
Malins

Mawi
Hadfield if Dan injured
Clarey
West
Earl
Simpson
Hall
Daly

Give players some time in the shirt, Malins at 15 especially as he isnt a winger unless he can regain a yard of pace.

I’d like to see a shot across some of the bows of the established players who aren’t performing. I don’t see why we should continually reward average (or worse) performances with a start or a bench position the following week.

I’m not even having a go at Ivan here. His confidence must be really shot- he must know he isn’t playing well and can’t be enjoying himself. A spell out the team is clearly needed for all parties.

I’m more thinking about guys like Earl (new contract recently), Daly (likely new contract shortly), Max (resigned for this season), Marco (new contract fairly recently I think - last year?), Faz (resigned for this season), Theo Dan etc. For whatever reason they really aren’t adding anything at all to our side at the moment yet are in the 23 each week if fit.

Agree on Earl, Faz and to some extent Daly (at least he tries to make things happen).

Max had a couple of shockers at 15 then was lumped out on the wing. Considering his injury lay off prior to the start of the season I think he deserves another shot at 15. We know there is a quality player in there.

Dan has been decent in the loose. He just seems to have the yips

Marco I think has done his job and been solid enough.

I feel we have to stick with Hadfield right now, especially when Jamie G is evidently struggling with his darts and JH has proved he is as solid in the tight as he is in the loose. Dan does sometimes have the yips at lineout time which has cost us dear before.

I 100% agree with most of that Sarrov, although I feel Daly is trying, he seems to have struggled a bit since that injury and the same is true with Max. Very understandable and they will come back into form soon I'm sure.
Earl and Faz seem to get into the team most weeks on performances past and not on their current form, which is worrying and suggests the higher-ups do not trust the younger players and academy to step up yet. They are just 2 players who are (or at least, were) world class and just have not been anywhere near form for the last few months.

One of the problems I have with the suggestions for changes is people seem to feel change for changes sake will improve things.
Some seem to think there's a motivation issue or maybe even a complacency with some starters, some that our Academy players are better than proven Internationals but surely how we play is at least as important as who we play.

Van-Zyl is getting his usual brick-bats but what are people expecting him to do. Yet again he provided super quick service the majority of the game he was on, that that grinds to halt once it goes beyond him is hardly his fault.
We were told Cinti is a defensive liability but not only was he not in this game an intercept of his stopped a pretty certain run-in for Glasgow. He did little in attack but what can he do which such limited ball. The few set plays we actually ran we had Daly running in the 13 channel to little effect.
Earl is getting a fair bit of comment too but again he's putting in massive shift after massive shift. When he isn't our main carrying option he's tackling and clearing etc what's being judged is his ability to have an impact which is fair but needs to be made in the context of what he's allowed to do. Almost every carry of his was against a set defence where he was pretty much the only option they had to worry about.

The point I'm making is do people really think swapping International A for Academy player B is actually going to improve things if the game plan remains the same. That seems a stretch to me and if that isn't the case and people think the game plan needs changing too then why not change it to suit the top quality players we have.
I'm still struggling for why the coaches changed the backs, injury excepted, for the Glasgow game after the impressive showing against Toulouse. I really hope against NRB we back the Toulouse selection plus Cinti if Lozo is unavailable.

I think NRB will be much tougher than many expect. They've got a little bit of confidence and as said above in the excellent match preview they have a number of SH recruits who joined over Christmas and will now bolsters their ranks.

No way Farrell doesn't start unless injured. I also think Clarey is still injured but maybe he's back. Is Street definitely out and is Lozo expected back.

I know it's a Prem game but I'd view it as part of a run of games including PRC games so would give games to combinations I'd like to see developed through that with a view to proving themselves to keep their starts once the Prem resumes after the 6 Nations. So Bracken at 9. Hartley and Cinti in the centre and Segun and Caluori with Malins in the back three.
Forwards I'm happy with more experience for this game and then hopefully we'll see some of the younger ones one the bench and even starting for the PRC games.

Farrell didn’t start against Toulouse, I don’t think it’s a given. I also think it’s been proven that him at 12 just doesn’t work properly so why we are doing anything but getting Hartley game time there is beyond me. Plenty of options to play alongside him at 13 if Loz is still out.

All fair comments Paul. My frustration with Earl lies more that he shows he is one of the top back rowers in the world when he pulls on an England and lions top, but simply hasn't replicated that (recently, at least) in a Saracens top.
I do feel bad for IvZ as he has been playing well for the last couple of games (he was superb vs Toulouse and good vs Glasgow) but there's a limit as to what he can do. Burke looked hamstrung with Farrell outside of him which was unusual since they have shown real promise when playing together at 10 and 12 respectively before.
Cinti has not been himself for a while now and it's concerning watching his performances for us compared to Los Pumas.
I thought Clarey was back training again but I could be wrong. In that case I reckon Tietie Tuimauiga will be the replacement tighthead.

I get that and share those feelings to an extent saracensfan62 I just feel in several of those cases the "fix" is fairly easy and it's to use them in more effective ways.
I think it's probably fair to say Earls best and most consistent performances have been at 8 for both club and Country. He benefits from getting his hands on the ball a lot. We achieved that well against Glasgow but with so little threat around him that he was easy to close down. We're not creating that little bit of space or uncertainty that he needs to be his best but he's being judged purely on his ability to deliver in my view rather than by the team failings that are making his role so difficult.

That's not to say players don't bear responsibility but you could apply the same reasoning to many of our "under-performing" players.
Malins and Cinti are both excellent attacking players but they need the ball in hand or to be used when they run great support lines. If what they're mainly doing is defending then it's going to be an issue because we're not getting to see their strengths and potentially highlighting weaknesses.
I'd add Daly. For me he's not been good in attack in particular for the past 5 games but we watched the Lions tour and have seen him previously and know he is top quality. Why is he kicking so much attacking ball away now. Why when he chooses to run from deep does he now habitually run away from space and into traffic. Is it confidence, is it coaching.
I don't know but we're not seeing the best of him because of it.
I also appreciate re the above examples there will always be cases when those are exactly the right calls to make but it feels like too often they're a default in attack.

For quite a few of those players it doesn't feel like a fix is either difficult to identify or complicated to implement but we make the same choices over and over again. It's a bit of a head-scratcher.

You could easily be right saracensfan62 I based that thinking re Clarey because of Tuimauiga being on the bench when Street went 80 recently. It's a shame that Clarey has struggled with injuries as I think he's a really solid 3rd choice if you have two "starting" quality TightHeads.

I think re Earl I may need to eat a bit of humble pie re his performance on Sunday. 21 carries (next nearest Tizard and Segun with 11) for 54 hard metres most tackles completed for Sarries with 15. That’s a big old shift against a mean defence and something we see from his England performances. I just don’t think we’re getting him into the right positions yet.

He also was turned over the most which suggests to me that he wasn’t getting enough support when he carried over the gainline.

I don't think his effort and work rate can be questioned but I felt he didn't do enough to look after the ball in contact. He was stripped in the tackle at least once and laid the ball back scrappily a number of times.

It was summed up for me when he made an excellent turnover then seemed to panic and chuck the ball back to our side, which Dempsey promptly dived on to win it back. He just seems that couple of % off.

Admittedly I am judging him against the high standards he has himself set.

Also if IVZ starts i may streak and disrupt the match...

I’ve been rather caught out by tge French. Going there next weekend and have tickets for Montauban v UBB and Pau V Toulon. But because France play Ireland, presumably all of the 40 or so squad players announced will be unable to play which will harm Pau particularly.

I’d genuinely be shocked/disappointed if Theo was on the naughty step. Lineout has misfired with or without him and his carrying is way up there and exactly what we’ll need to help Earl next year.

As to the streaking, good luck to you on a field full of rugby players 😂😭😭

Last streaker we saw was at Ravenhall on a freezing cold january evening when we were playing against Ulster in the Heineken, the lad was wearing a scarf and boots and walked diagonally across the pitch, all the players were so stunned along with the staff that no one gave chase! It was the evening that Paddy Wallace broke his ankle finishing his career, the pitch was changing colour with the frost through the game, OMG it was cold! We won, by the way, happy memories.

15 Elliot Daly

14 Noah Caluori

13 Alex Lozowski

12 Nick Tompkins

That 10, 12, 13 is baffling to me.

No sign of Dan again but he is in the England squad and not listed as rehabbing. Would be great to hear more from the club around injuries.

Pleased for Bracken, hope he goes well.

Would assume Maro and Earl are rested to keep under the maximum game involvements, as they are both likely to play every 6 Nations game.

Agree re 10, 12, 13 they are ‘as slow as’.

I do wonder whether we’ve asked to swap the post six nations week off for one beforehand with Maro and Ben?
Do we know if Cinti is injured or dropped? Might have preferred him on the bench to Max
Not going to be easy, there’ll be a hell of a lot of emotion flying around and hopefully everyone keeps their heads.

Where is Hall or Elliott or Hartley?

The 10, 12 and 13 combination is one we played many years ago. It wasn't’t dynamic then and is less so now🤷‍♂️

Elliott is still injured i believe. He made his comeback for Ampthill a couple of months or so ago and lasted 5 mins.

Best case scenario - we are looking to put together a consistent Cup team to get players used to combinations and reasonable game time. With the 6 day turnaround they have left Hartley, Hall, Spink etc out to ensure they are fit and firing.

Not particularly inspired but maybe a choice of veterans to go out there and do a job despite the unsettling news. Only reason I can think of that selection being made.

That 10-13 is such a conservative choice and depresses me when one considers the youth we have.

I genuinely think it would be harsh to put them out there after the MM news. This one is for the veterans to weather.

We need to give the Cup a really good go. Realistically it's where our younger players are going to get the most game time and develop, plus its our only chance of silverware this season.

Hopefully it’s not being derailed by injuries as it has in previous seasons. We’ve not seen much of Hall. Jacken and Elliott are injured as far as I know. Any news on Brantingham who is also injured a lot? Spink not been seen since the last prem cup matchles. Keylock is in brilliant form for Ampthill but obviously Johnson deserves to start at 10. Stewart-Harris and Davidson away with the u20s.

I assume youngsters we have available are O’Driscoll, Sodeke, Sylvester, West, Hammmick, Adegmile, C Bracken (although I’d probably rather save him for the prem), Hartley (if still included in youngsters) Johnson. Maybe Zac Finch? Lad is lightning on the wing. Ben Morrow possibly?

Feels less like a squad that can really push for the semis unless some of those injured return.

The sun is shining and we are at home with a 3pm kick off on a Saturday. All I want now is a committed performance from the boys and if that happens I would be hopeful of 5 points and a smile on my face.

Probably the last season we’ll be able to say a massive win like this v Newcastle tells us very little about the team considering their recruitment.

I imagine the timing of MMs’ news was probably based around this fixture but I’m glad the guys turned up. Enjoyed Bracken’s delivery, Segun v Wade was great fun, Caluori continues to impress in other areas than just try scoring and high balls. AOC looked a bit more like the guy we know and love, let’s hope that continues.

Bracken must start every game...if he doesn't its criminal.

Joy to see a game without slow ball and inane box kicking

Thought TieTie , Tizard and obviously the two wingers deserved credit

Was pleased Charlie got a proper outing, Mitch got 25 mins (and was good) and Noah stayed on. Interesting Burke had a spell at 15.

Decent weather for January, very decent crowd considering the oppo and actually a pretty decent all round performance with the stars being the 2 wingers but there were plenty of encouragements elsewhere. For example, it was nice to see some of JMG’s sublime skills on show. Willis was his usual different class. Looking to the future Charlie B has an excellent pass and can be quick when required although his box kicking is still a work in progress. We used 3 different full backs with Daly, Malins briefly and then Burke.
Newcastle were quite limited but we did what was necessary and it does still mean that if we improve in 2nd half of season that we can still make top 4 at end of season

Nothing really to take from that game. Newcastle are absolutely dreadful, summed up by Tompkins' try. Our academy would have given them a game.

5 points banked and time to build some momentum through the cup.

After the shambles of the first 5 minutes it was as one sided as we’ve seen. Actually could have had even more. Nice to see some pace from Tomkins and a super 50-22. JMG looked like he had a point to prove, in fairness everyone ended up well in credit.
Still have no idea how we’ll replace Willis who was phenomenal again.
Was surprised a clearly limping Noah was kept on while Roti and Daly went off?

Well as luck would have it our PRC game next week is away against NRB and as it's their home game I think there's a very reasonable chance we see a team of a similar strength to today.

Agree with all those above that it's hard to know what to take from that other than the very welcome 5 points and yet its just so nice to see some attacking ambition and execution and a number of players delivering performances closer to the better versions of their normal games.
Charlie Bracken had a very good game and his pass really is a thing of beauty. Also thought his try-saver on Christie was brilliant. It really took the wind out of their sails after a good start.
Both wingers showed really well. I hope we give Caluori a run in both PRC and Prem.
Farrell kicked well at sticks given quite a few of the earlier ones were from wide out on both sides. Better from Daly too.
Mention for Isiekwe who displayed some lovely handling and support play and even had a nice carry over the gain line. Hadfield good too and nice to see some Skilful Beast mode George.

Crazy that it's almost 2 months till our next Prem fixture away at Bath. Let's hope we can still remember the intent we played with in this game when it rolls around.

Looking forward to the PRC in the mean time and interested to see availability of our younger players. Hartley and Cinti injured?

I think the first mad 10 mins we saw 4 try saving tackles from Faz (2), Issy and Charlie. That showed great determination and passion, it was great to see.

Hartley was part of the pre-match warm up

Cinti came down the steps in the East stand towards the end of the game and looked fine, but you never know

I felt for Max so much. Finally a chance to show his skill at 15 with a perfect set up of just the 10 as playmaker and not 12 as well. Similar to when he briefly got to do it against Bristol and looked great. Then 2 mins later Roti has to come off and he gets shunted to the left wing again.

at that rate it may take only about 5 seasons to eclipse the all time record..

wont be long before he will have mandatory england rest however, i do wonder now though if Christian Wade will actually be able to catch Chris now .... he ain't getting much ball past the 12/13 midfield.

Well that makes life easy. Just play him for 80 minutes of the next 8 games and that's an extra 19 trys!
