You can give him a 3 and still take into account the fact that it's his first game in 6 months, we'll all hopefully give him the benefit of the doubt but performance wise he was awful.
Stick with the 5 for JJ though, he was anonymous as he was always going to be in a game like that.

I thought Rob Webber had a good game for you guys, I really like him. Very strong lineout too. Not a night for the backs really, but Ford certainly outplayed Godman at fly-half.
Good luck for the rest of the season, can't wait to get back to the Rec in February.
5 for James & Wilson is, IMHO, extremely harsh. Yes, the Newcastle props were prominent in the loose in the early exchanges, but except for one occasion Bath were the superior scrum throughouyt the first half. The damage done to Newcastle was evidenced by the comparatively early change of our front row - & our pack then proceeded to dominate.
As I said on another thread, I believe the new scrum management protocol will show that the effect of the superior scrum gets more marked in the latter stages of a game - as it used to 10 years ago, pre "hit".
Do not understand the antipathy to JJ either. OK - on a night when most backs would struggle, there may not have been a huge amount to commend (except for some highly determined defence), but I saw nothing to condemn either - so 4 is a poor reflection of his efforts.
He spent 55 minutes of the match playing outside a sub who was off the pace - neither match fit, nor match ready in skills, yet gets an even worst mark.
I do not think your mark Bri reflects his performance, but your preconceived view.
I agree PJ, was never a game to show off his attacking flair, however defensively he was part of a very good back line.
I tried to not comment on this thread and just ignore it, but now I've started:
James and Wilson in my opinion were immense in the scrum, as were Catt and Anthony.... Could give all of those a 7 quite easily. Webber I thought was poor, yes he was ok in loose, but his part in the line out was again poor, so can take him down to a 6.
Hooper on that performance deserved his start, and as such I think a 7 is well deserved.
I watched Houston as missed pre season games and he did a lot of the dirty work and a 5 is very harsh assessment.
Stringer looked very sharp, and is anything but ready to step aside.
Banners was average, he lost the ball in contact at least once, and still doesn't use his speed and weight to good effect.
As for the rest, yes a good assessment!

Watched the game again and JJ was non existant, read many other boards and they say the same, comments like"did he play".
He's hasn't done anything yet in BBW.Some of the signings have been excellent some have not.I don't blame the coaches for this we can't get everyone spot on.Ive warmed to Ford jnr but until JJ starts to play a half decent game it's hard to.
I'm inclined to give him more than three friendlies and a match played in a Geordie monsoon before I dismiss his qualities. I also think Ford will have some real stinkers to go with the blinders.
Demanding that he proves himself is fine Bri, but it's reasons all to start with a neutral opinion. You set out stating he's a show pony who should never have been signed, rendering your opinion prejudiced at best.
JJ was solid in defence. No he wasn't great going forward with ball in hand but neither were any of our other backs apart from Watson, who I thought was great going forward and will be a danger on solid grounds.
Your prejudice shows Bri with JJ's rating and that is why I, and I'm sure others, don't give them any credit. He is a very good player as you don't get England caps by just being a "show pony".
I don't think he'll get near a England shirt again unless it on a Mickey Mouse tour against a seconds or thirds team.
I hope I'm proved wrong a he can produce some sort of form.
Is this a good place to comment on adoptees? I thin it would be nice.
Batty: Come on and played well to me. Our line seemed to improve when he came on. He was part of a front row that looked dodgy at first then really stepped up, including a couple of real mullerings. Probably worth mentioning that they stepped after the NC front row sub, may have helped.
I would describe, as others have, henson as rusty rather than a liability. Others made similar mistakes on a night set up for mistakes. Seemed to me to be doing the right things, with the right attitude, but his execution let him down. I think that will come.
Look at JJ's performance and that constitutes a poor one but I suppose my judgement maybe clouded by the three preseason poor ones as well.
The way I see it is,a player that I believe is on a six figure salary should hit the ground running,so far he hasn't but lets hope he does in the future.
I understand your sentiment Bri (even if I don't agree with it).
But what about his performance constituted a poor performance. With the exception of Watson, our outside backs hardly saw the ball... JJ wasn't missing tackles left, right and centre... he didn't give away a ton of penalties... he wasn't knocking in on all the time... making bad kicks etc. Was he really our worst player?
Performance is exclusive of salary, or pre-match impression. If you rankings are going to reflect your previous opinions then they'll just trend towards the mean and they will be meaningless.
It's handicapping peoples performance based on a system you only appear to understand...
Substitute I have a question for you Bri:
In a game like that, when i could count on my hand the number of times the ball got past 10, what would have constituted a good performance for you?
Excellent post that merits a thoughtful answer not the usual self-promoting bravado. There is a clear prejudice towards certain players.
I don't think he'll get near a England shirt again unless it on a Mickey Mouse tour against a seconds or thirds team.
I hope I'm proved wrong a he can produce some sort of form.
Quote:
How can telling the truth be called prejudice? He wouldn't make the Saxons on present form.
So which is it never or just on present form?

Bri What and continue to carry a player until he shows some form?We need our best 15 next week.
You've already ignored this question when asked by substitute, as expected as all you are is a WUM, but I'll ask again - What constituted his poor performance? What did you expect from him in those conditions that he didn't do?
OK having watched the game, thanks to Aviva, its clear that the defence structure is quite complicated. I would suggest one of JJs tasks is to make sure its working effectively. Given that Newcastle scored 0 I'd suggest he'd be happy with the work done on the day. Especially given that 'the new boy' came on half way through the game. 6 out of 10 - not the day for an attacking back.
I also was very impressed with Houstons all round game. He did a huge amount of work in the tight. I'd worried that he was a bit of a showpony with lots of runs, but little else based on the agents clips. Quite the opposite from that performance - despite, like Newcastle, the fact that he was stepping up from Div 2 rugby. 7/10
I was less impressed with Garvey and a number of knockons/poor tackles etc, although admittedly he got through an enormous amount of energy/work. 6/10
The lineout was OK #until they started overcomplicating it. Maybe Newcastle had worked out the simple calls so stepping up was required.
Great start to the season. Next week will be interesting.
Bri, you panned Anthony Watson for his performances pre-season. Said he should in no way start. But he did. And didn't he do well? Cut JJ some slack. Let's see what he can do given a bit of continuity (and keep Banners on the wing where he is best).
Watson started because Devoto got injured in training not because he was first choice, once JJ starts to earn his corn I shall give him some slack but in the 4 games for us so far he's done very little.
Theirs backing and theirs backing,if a player is not performing to a standard I think they should in BBW its time for them to be dropped and someone else given the shirt,he must be fantastic in training because he wouldn't be in my starting line up on what I've seen in 4 games.
I'm sure he will start against Tigers so lets hope he bucks up.
Do you ever bother to actually read what you write Bri, so as to try to see if any of it actually makes sense? And please, learn that your opinion is very different from fact, and start presenting things as your opinion, not as facts.

I'm sure should he perform below the standard required he (like anyone) will be dropped.
He's only played in one game (no the pre season random team run outs don't count), a game where no back had any chance to do anything in attack, and there is no suggestion by anyone that he had any issues in defence.
You appear to be condemning him on the grounds that he didn't do anything spectacular, but neither did anyone else.
It's a shame you can't find it in you be as good as your world and support Bath players once they in BB&W.
Joseph spent a lot of time getting attention from the physios for a groin injury, so not only did he not score a spectacular 80m solo try he also unfairly took up the time of the on-field medics which is unacceptable. Also that strapping they use isn't free. More money down the drain.

But United are Bath's 2nds and play against other clubs' 2nds, so the point still stands even if they were Argentina's 2nds. Second level international competition can't be viewed as 'Mickey Mouse' if second level club competition is somehow relevant.
Only judge on what he's done for us,which is not much,I really hope he improves.what more can I say,
Dorset Boy if I get asked a question I shall reply if that's ok with you.
Right, but neither Ben Williams nor Josh Ovens have actually done that much for our first team and you're happy to sing their praises to high heaven. Because you're a hypocrite.
Haven't posted on here for a while and glad of it. It has become extremely boring with the same idiotic statements every third post. I used to think Bod was bad but Bri is a different level. Its sad that he and others seem to have driven away many contributors who had something intelligent to say and only felt the need to say it once.
imho - of course.

What are you on about Hasta, and what have Ovens and Williams got to do with it?
